Adventures of a Dermatologist ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

Skin health is not all about skincare products (forget what every other dermatologist on here says!)
Sometimes itโ€™s putting your phone down. Looking up. Letting yourself feel wonder and awe.

We spend so much of life distracted, overstimulated and rushing instead of seeing and feeling whatโ€™s happening around us. But donโ€™t be fooled, chronic stress shows up on our skin whether we care to acknowledge it or not. (What. Youโ€™re not stressed? Really?? Reaaaaaally?!!!)

Over the last couple of years, Iโ€™ve become increasingly convinced that we need to spend more of our lives offline and be far more intentional about how we spend our time and attention. There is truly no point having great skin if youโ€™re too stuck in survival mode to enjoy it. I believe this deeply, deeply, deeply (my patients know that I get nosy most about much more than their skin because I believe my role extends to helping them live their best lives and that means zooming out and looking at the bigger picture - sleep, food, relationships, work life balance etc). Although admittedly, it is a lot easier to practise mindfulness in magnificent, magical Marrakesh than back in the real world ๐ŸŽˆ

Happy antihistamine season to all who celebrate ๐Ÿ˜‰

An ode to Spring - my favourite (and most sneezy) time of year ๐ŸŒธ

Pictured:
- Lots of yummy lunches and dinners at home in pursuit of our 30 plants per week goal
- Beautiful flowers spotted on my walks
- Noticed and enjoyed the smell of fresh bread in the bakery and my hand cream (which is so delicious that I keep sniffing my hands)
- Earlier sunrise means time for early morning yoga practice which soothes my nerves and fills my cup for the rest of the day
- Daisy chains adorning our wrists and front door (daughter is on Easter hols)
- Prepared a pile for Vinted - time for someone else to enjoy what Iโ€™m not wearing
- Watched Mayerling at the ROH (gave the principals a standing ovation, they were superb)
- Trying to be as unbusy and peaceful as I can

PS In January I quietly put my phone on a diet by installing an app blocker. A couple of hours of Instagram a weekโ€ฆ and thatโ€™s it. Highly recommend.

International Womenโ€™s Day felt like a good excuse to make this post entirely about me ๐Ÿ˜

Slide one: me in my scrubs.
Slide two: the clinic at 25 Harley Street where I spend most of my working life caring for patients (most of them women).

And the rest?

The things that keep me well.

Colourful meals. Pilates and yoga. Fresh flowers in my kitchen. Clothes that make me happy. Trainers for long clinic days and getting around London, red heels for the fun ones. Very good food in very good restaurants. Finding moments of beauty and joy, even in the food I make.

For a long time I did what many women do, which is quietly (and sometimes begrudgingly) putting everyone else first. These days Iโ€™m trying to be a bit more deliberate about making space for the things that keep me healthy, calm and happy.

Not in a grand, Instagrammable way. You may or may not have noticed I am only checking in once per week since the start of the year.

Itโ€™s something I think about a lot with my patients too. Helping people feel comfortable being themselves, with their skin and in their lives. Itโ€™s about giving yourself permission to take up a bit of space in your own life ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

And that feels like a pretty good International Womenโ€™s Day message ๐Ÿฆ‹
