11. MAHALAKSHMI VRAT KATHA
A commonly circulated 16-day Mahalakshmi Vrat Katha connects the vrat with the Pandavas and the instruction of Shri Krishna. The story is traditionally presented as a teaching about restoring prosperity through devotion to Mahalakshmi.
Once, during the time of the Pandavas, their fortunes had greatly declined. They had lost their kingdom and were living through hardship.
Yudhishthira became concerned about the welfare of his family and asked Shri Krishna -
“O Lord, please tell me of a vrat through which a person may worship Mahalakshmi and regain auspiciousness, prosperity and peace.”
Shri Krishna then explained the Mahalakshmi Vrat.
He told Yudhishthira that the vrat begins on Bhadrapada Shukla Ashtami and continues for sixteen days, concluding on Ashwin Krishna Ashtami.
The devotee should worship Mahalakshmi with purity, devotion and discipline.
A sacred sixteen-strand thread is prepared and sixteen knots are associated with the sixteen days of the vrat. Offerings are made to Maa Lakshmi, and Her names are remembered with faith.
The devotee should maintain sattvic conduct, control anger and speech, practise charity according to ability and keep the mind focused upon Shri Mahalakshmi.
Shri Krishna explained that the essence of the vrat was not merely the desire for material wealth.
The deeper prayer was for :-
Shri — auspiciousness
Dhanya — nourishment
Dhana — material resources
Kirti — good reputation
Saubhagya — good fortune
Shanti — peace
Sadbuddhi — right understanding
spiritual abundance
The devotee completes the sixteen-day worship with special puja on the final day.
Traditionally, the final worship includes the sixteen-knot thread, offerings, Mahalakshmi Stotra/Mantras and, according to some traditions, offering arghya to the Moon.
Shri Krishna taught that sincere devotion, discipline, charity and righteous conduct are essential parts of the vrat.
The Pandavas followed the teaching with devotion.
By the grace of Shri Mahalakshmi, their circumstances gradually changed and their lost prosperity and dignity were restored.
Thus the tradition teaches that where faith, dharma, effort, generosity and gratitude are maintained, Shri—the principle of auspicious abundance—may flourish.

🪔 14. MAHALAKSHMI AARTI
After the Chalisa, perform your customary Lakshmi Aarti.
If you do not have a specific family tradition, you may use -
Perform the diya clockwise before Maa.
15. KSHAMA PRARTHANA
At the end, say -
Then -
Bow down.
16. PRASAD & PARANA
Offer the naivedya first.
Then distribute prasad among family members.
On the concluding day, break the vrat according to your chosen fasting tradition.
If you are following a specific family/community Mahalakshmi Vrat paddhati, that tradition should take precedence over this simplified home version, because the sixteen-day vrat has several regional forms.
**A beautiful final prayer :-
