A lot of people hear “longevity” and think it means complicated routines or expensive supplements.

But healthy ageing usually comes down to something much simpler: consistency with the basics.

The foundations that make the biggest difference:

✅ good sleep (and regular sleep times)
✅ daily movement (walking counts - strength helps even more)
✅ fresh air and daylight
✅ nourishing food most of the time
✅ safe relationships, laughter, and support

Those aren’t small things - they’re the habits that help your body recover, stay resilient, and feel better for longer.

If you’d like support building a plan that fits your real life, HealthMatters Group is here. Explore our services and book a friendly discovery call.

Happy Pride Month 🌈

Pride is a celebration - and also a reminder that everyone deserves to feel safe being themselves.

Inclusion isn’t a big public statement. It’s the everyday choices:

• not assuming someone’s gender or relationship
• using the language someone asks for
• speaking up when “banter” becomes harmful
• making space for different identities, families, and needs

Many people spend years editing themselves to avoid judgement. That’s not “being sensitive” - that’s self-protection.

This month, let’s choose curiosity over assumptions, and acceptance over comparison. Because belonging isn’t a “nice extra” - it supports mental health.

From all of us at HealthMatters Group: Happy Pride 💛

✨ MEET THE TEAM ✨

Dr Natascha Van Zyl is a Health Psychologist & Lifestyle Medicine Specialist

Dr Van Zyl supports people navigating:

→ Anxiety & depression
→ Chronic health conditions
→ Trauma & stress
→ Obesity & bariatric care
→ Hormonal transitions & women’s health
→ Addiction & emotional wellbeing

Health challenges are rarely “just physical” or “just psychological”. The relationship between mind and body is deeply connected, and meaningful change often requires support for both.

Her approach combines psychology, lifestyle medicine, mindfulness, and compassionate, personalised care to help clients feel less stuck and more connected to themselves again.

At the heart of her work is a simple belief: lasting change happens when people feel understood, empowered, and supported without judgement.

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month globally, an opportunity to broaden the conversation around what can support mental wellbeing.

When we think about mental health, we often think about therapy, stress management, movement, mindfulness, and sleep - all incredibly important foundations for wellbeing.

But nutrition matters too 🧠

The food we eat can influence mood, energy, inflammation, gut health, brain function, and the pathways involved in stress resilience and emotional wellbeing.

Following on from Mental Health Awareness Week earlier in May, we’re sharing a few nutrients and food-based strategies we often focus on in clinic to support mental health more holistically, including:

→ Amino acids including Tryptophan
→ Omega-3 fats
→ Choline
→ Fermented foods

Mental well-being is never about one single solution, but for many people, nutrition can become an important part of a broader, evidence-informed support plan.

Schizophrenia is one of the most misunderstood mental health conditions, and stigma can often be just as difficult as the condition itself 💚

This World Schizophrenia Day, Dr. Natascha Van Zyl shares an important reminder that schizophrenia does not define a person.

People living with schizophrenia are mothers, fathers, partners, friends, colleagues, students, and community members with hopes, talents, and meaningful lives.

We can all help reduce stigma by:

✔️ Listening without judgement
✔️ Challenging myths when we hear them
✔️ Using respectful language
✔️ Showing empathy and patience

Understanding starts with conversation and compassion.

Seeking support can feel like a big step, but the right therapeutic relationship can make all the difference.

Most people don’t need more pressure to “push through”.
They need better recovery. 💚

For Mental Health Awareness Week, James, the CEO and founder of The HealthMatters Group, shares 5 practical ways to support your mental wellbeing and recovery during stressful, busy, or emotionally draining periods:

✔️ Reframing stress as a signal, not a personal flaw
✔️ Move gently and consistently, instead of focusing on intensity
✔️ Support steadier energy and mood through nutrition
✔️ Build small nervous system "pause" moments into your day
✔️ Ask for support earlier than you think you need it

Small, sustainable habits can make a real difference to how your mind and body cope under pressure.

And if you’re struggling, you do not have to wait until you’ve completely “hit the wall” before reaching out for support.

The HealthMatters Group team is here to help you move forward with compassionate, personalised care.

This National Women’s Health Awareness Week, we wanted to share some of the most common challenges we see affecting women’s health.

From hormonal changes and autoimmune conditions to heart disease, chronic stress, burnout, and conditions that take years to diagnose, many women are carrying far more than people realise.

Too often, symptoms are minimised, normalised, or dismissed as “just stress” or “just hormones”.

Women’s health is complex and deeply interconnected.

Physical health, emotional well-being, sleep, stress, nutrition, and hormonal health all influence one another, which is why we take an integrated approach at the HealthMatters Group, always looking at the bigger picture and leaning on our multi-disciplinary team where it's needed.

Swipe to explore:

→ Hormonal health across different life stages
→ Autoimmune disease in women
→ Heart disease awareness
→ Complex female conditions
→ The impact of balancing careers, caregiving, and chronic stress
