Dear Therapist in Training,

You are learning your skills, taking in theories, doing assignments, seeing clients, and balancing all these plates around you.

Your care, your work, your diligence has a place.

And so does your championing!

In this short, free open letter (click the link tree in my bio), I wonder what it is like to champion and coach our clients, cheerleading and instilling that voice “you can do it!” - stepping into a human to human experience.

Over the winter, I took time away to practice what I often say, “to take care of myself” as the human I am.

This trip was a choice that took 9 months to plan, involved packing up a home into a storage unit, leave a counselling role I was working in London, and transition clients online in time for the trip away.

The trip taught me many things, but here are a few I’ve come up with. One of the biggest things I think I reconnected to was my sense of adventure and how healing sunshine is.

For those who are curious, sometimes you can flip the script- it might take some intentionality and planning. Sometimes you have to question the social stories we all tell each other, and flip the script- who knows you might end up with a vibrant life.

Dear Therapist in Training,

My lived experiences, create the fabric of the chair upon which I sit.

I can hold deep pain. I can see the hard work. I hold the authentic expression of a human under pressure. I recognise those on the sidelines. I hope for those who have lost it. I know the power of dreams and movement. I am part of the space. It’s not about me, but I co-create this.

Dear therapist in training,

To p*e or not to p*e, that is the question.

It’s a funny thing to question “am I allowed to stop a session for a toilet break?” - I used to feel so anxious about having to do this, and wondered if I would look unprofessional… turns out I just looked human, and relatable.

This is from one of my last concerts at the Albert Hall, before moving to the states. I am somewhere on stage left, the fourth desk in, playing with the Second Violins in the Symphony Orchestra.

I learned to play the violin by ear, as I struggled to read music as I missed the year 2 music reading lessons because of moving to the UK. As an adult, I can now read music more fluently from my choir practice!

One of the questions I often get is “why”… why do I do this thing, why do I respond in a particular way… when we begin to ask why, we have to get curious about where this comes from.

Part of my work is to help you to trace the themes, threads and patterns. To explore how your past may be showing up now, giving you clarity and understanding, which helps you to then ask the questions of “where do I go from here”?

Therapy is a a deep process of understanding and connection with yourself and others around you.

I certainly am not a “glug- a- tron” when it comes to pouring this liquid gold, although I know for a fact that I could easily get through a large container of olive oil in a week. 😂
