Today we remember Florence Nightingale, who died on 13 August 1910.
Known as the “Lady with the Lamp”, Nightingale gained fame for her role in improving sanitary conditions in military hospitals during the Crimean War.
Between 1854 and 1856, she led a team of nurses caring for wounded soldiers, transforming the standards of care through better hygiene, cleanliness and compassion. Her work helped significantly reduce death rates and laid the foundations for modern nursing.
Her nickname came from her nightly rounds with a lamp, as she tended to injured soldiers and brought comfort during some of their darkest moments.
More than a century later, Florence Nightingale’s legacy continues to inspire generations.
We remember her dedication, courage and lasting impact.
