We’re not separate from the world around us.
The news we see and hear can stir feelings and anxieties that are both conscious and unconscious. Fears about safety, loss, separation, powerlessness, uncertainty or the vulnerability of those we love.
Sometimes, looking away from the screen isn’t avoidance. It can be a way of creating enough psychological space to think, feel and remain connected to ourselves.
We may find ourselves checking the news repeatedly, feeling unable to look away, becoming unusually angry or distressed, or alternatively feeling numb and disconnected.
And sometimes, the intensity of our reaction isn’t only about what is happening out there. Current events can resonate with earlier experiences, relationships or feelings that have their own history within us.
These responses can be ways of trying to manage feelings that are difficult to hold.
Therapy can offer a space to explore what the wider world awakens in us — including feelings that may be difficult to put into words.
