How does family-based treatment for anorexia work?

FBT works by placing parents in charge of re-establishing consistent eating, then gradually returning age-appropriate control to the young person as recovery progresses. Evidence-based practice suggests early weight gain is a strong signal of likely response. It tends to suit families able to commit time and consistency, though it does not lead to full recovery for everyone.

Digital safeguarding incidents in schools with and without smartphone policies: a cross-sectional study in England https://bit.ly/3NLAYqc

"Smartphones/social media have been hailed as offering educational benefits, but widespread concerns highlight multiple negative effects, including for learning and well-being. Some countries enforce school phone bans, whereas others (e.g., England) have guidance promoting ‘phone-free environments’ but no legal mandate at present. There is limited evidence on the benefits of such policies, including whether they promote safeguarding."

How does depression present in young people with ADHD?

Depression symptoms in young people with ADHD are broadly similar to those seen more widely, but they occur more often and can be harder to spot. Low mood may sit alongside irritability, restlessness and concentration difficulties that overlap with ADHD itself. Presentations also vary, with some showing prominent low self-esteem or distressing thoughts, so careful assessment matters.

Why is a holistic approach important when assessing children with possible RAD or DSED?

Because trauma, neurodivergence, and attachment difficulties so often overlap, focusing on a single explanation risks missing part of the picture. A holistic approach considers a child’s full range of needs rather than forcing an either/or answer. This supports more accurate identification and, in turn, more useful and individualised support.

In this episode of the Mind the Kids podcast, host Mark Tebbs sits down with Emma Butler to explore one of the most pressing questions in child mental health research: can we predict poor mental health in childhood as early as birth?

With children's mental health rising sharply across Europe and England — from one in eleven in 2017 to one in five by 2023 — Emma makes the case for why a preventative, early intervention approach is not just desirable but essential. The conversation covers the growing global burden of childhood mental health disorders, the critical difference between prediction and causation in research, and why psychosocial and socioeconomic factors consistently emerge as the strongest predictors of later poor mental health.
