Do you need help?

These days we seem to be encouraged to be completely self sufficient in the way we access information and support.

We can ask Google or ChatGBT for answers to nearly every problem that comes our way.

Apparently more and more people seek help from AI rather than a therapist. This is quite alarming. Seeing a person’s facial expressions gives out more information than merely the content of what they choose to tell you.

I wonder how an AI chat feed could cure a phobia for instance? A completely irrational state that is all to do with feelings of fear. A learned state which has somehow hooked up a connection which has no useful purpose. How could AI induce a calm and peaceful state where a person felt safe enough to let go an old fear story and replace it with a thinking process making a proper assessment of the situation?

Many of us at school felt that if we couldn’t understand the lesson it was somehow our fault. Or that we were stupid. We never thought to imagine that it was the teacher lacking in an ability to explain.

However the founder of a successful company won’t have achieved it all by him/herself. The skill is in having the right people around to ask. Even a tech entrepreneur won’t be able to keep up with the finer details of programming.

Doing everything yourself is not the best use of your energy or time. And sometimes it takes another person to help from different point of view.

This could be a colleague, a mentor or even your therapist!

Resetting by resting

In France the August holiday is enshrined, along with a proper lunch break and the subsidised baguette, as a basic human right.

Frustrating as this may be for tourists who find much of Paris fermé during this time, la rentrée at the end of August sees shopkeepers refreshed and full of smiles for their customers.

The Michael Douglas character in the 1987 film Wall Street set a different tone about switching off with the famous quote “lunch is for wimps”. While in the U.K. the atmosphere of Margaret Thatcher’s government certainly killed off long restaurant lunches.

The tendency is to eat a sandwich at your desk during the lunch break, or be on holiday with half an eye on work emails. And wearing this distraction as badge of honour.

The underlying message is that downtime is unnecessary.

But just like a muscle cannot be continuously tensed, we all need the off switch on a regular basis. To force people to work continuously without proper breaks is inhumane and counterproductive.

So, here’s to a calm and crisp Autumn reset with renewed energy and perspective. And a continued relaxed mindset.

Why do we procrastinate?

A number of my pre university clients this summer have highlighted procrastination as a problem.

Some journalists trumpet the virtue of the deadline.

My son was a journalist at the BBC for 17 years. He was an editor on Five Live Breakfast and experienced the thrill of arriving at 4.30 am at the studio with the task ahead of producing the 6am live show complete with interviews from guests yet to be contacted.

Last minute advocates claim the adrenaline generated in the face of a near miss sharpens the brain and results in a better piece of work. Similar to the sharp focus of a tight rope walker without a safety harness.

For most people however, this is not the case. Anxiety produces cortisol which muddies the vision and causes distraction. Creative energy is dissipated

So why do so many people leave things to the last moment, giving themselves the worst chance of doing their best?

If you have a 3 week lead time why spend 2.5 weeks anxiously with the task looming? Getting it done and dusted in week one means the 2 weeks following can be spent refining and/or relaxing in a happy state of achievement.

It nearly always comes down to the view we have of ourselves and our inner self confidence.

Our chattering emotional brain asks repeatedly:

What if I don’t do it well?
What if I don’t get the grades?
What if people think I’m not up to it?

And then:

Let’s stay as we are. It’s safer.

Luckily the more rational side of our thinking finally takes control. And the task gets done. At a cost of expending needless negative energy in the run up.

We always have a choice. To be led by our fears or to be calm clear and focused.

As Mark Twain famously said in his Eat a Frog metaphor, if you tackle the thing first that you would most likely put off, the rest of the day’s challenges will pale by comparison.

Unless the idea of eating frogs gives you a thrill of course!

How long are you going to carry on working?

I was asked the other day by another therapist

Simple answer:

When clients stop wanting to come and see me.

To me the number of years I’ve been lucky enough to be alive on this planet is irrelevant for:

- competence
- memory
- intuition
- energy
- health

As a therapist a longer life and practice experience is a huge plus

I can remember details about past clients as sharply as the flavour of a dish I consumed 40 years ago as a restaurateur.

My intuition is more heightened now (and sometimes I throw out the rule book!)

I have more energy than 20 years ago through consistent daily exercise

I have never missed a client appointment through ill health.

————

So let’s think a bit more like David Attenborough and less about retirement (whatever that means)

And thank you to all my clients who keep me fully booked!

Now here’s an idea…

What if what you wanted had already happened. In the past?

Instead of pursuing some future goal, with all the elements of desire attached, you could simply upgrade to having achieved that new house, new job, new relationship.

Fact. Done. Completed.

And then all you have to do is grow into it.

No goals. No striving. Just embodiment.

The trick is to focus on the period a while afterwards. When the novelty has worn off and the upgrade seems normal.

It’s not so different from some hypnosis messages:

You are now the person who does have a choice….
or
Your new state of inner self confidence….
or
Now you are in control…..

Assuming that the desired state has already been achieved.

The problem with goals and targets is that they are set in future. And it’s often so much easier to leave them there.

Feeling comfortable that while you have the right intentions, you might never have to tackle them.

Resulting in permanent limbo.

——————

It’s worth an experiment because

How do we know that time is linear anyway?

I’ll let you know how I get on!

Awards season!

End of term celebrations

Industry awards dinners

Bonding and conviviality

Cemented by half a bottle of wine in the meal ticket

———————

So what does someone do at one of these events who has given up alcohol?

A client who has just done this shared with me today:

My boss has been my drinking buddy. It’s been our bond. Not drinking alcohol at the Dinner tonight will be a challenge.

————————

Richard (not his real name) wasn’t worried about succumbing to an alcoholic drink (I wouldn’t risk losing all Ive achieved for anything)

He was concerned about losing his boss’s regard.

———————-

So often we drink to join with others, blending into the fuzziness, afraid to be seen as the odd one out.

The truth is as Richard said today:

I’ve got my freedom back.
I can go to any gathering knowing I can drive back

I have renewed respect from my teenage son for sticking at it

My wife tells me I’m so much nicer to live with

I sleep well and have much more energy

I’m much calmer and more productive at work with my clear head

—————-

Now isn’t that what is really going to win his boss’s regard?

And luckily non alcohol drinks are ever more available so you never have to look like the odd one out to others either.

2 sides of the same bridge.

Viewed seconds apart.

One calm and tranquil; one frenetic and turbulent.

Same water viewed from different angles.

————————-

So many things have different viewpoints.

It is up to us how we look

We can look, pause, turn and look again.

And find tranquility right in front of us.

If you could wave a magic wand just now.....

What would your life look like?

You might think:

- I'd have won a million pounds on the Lottery
- I'd have a new job
- I'd be pregnant
- I'd be phobia free
- I'd have had a good night's sleep

Whatever it is that would make that magical difference to your life is entirely personal to you.

Only you can decide.

The main thing is to identify it, and imagine clearly how your life would be transformed.

In the process you may hear protests from your emotional primitive mind:

- I don't deserve it
- It's too hard
- I'll probably fail
- The odds against it are too great
- It's not the right time

Our primitive mind hates change. That part of the brain loves everything to carry on the same. Why change when you're here and safe doing what you always do??

Our primitive mind is not interested in what makes us happy and fulfillled. Only our survival.

So this is when we need our rational minds to step up, to quieten the fears and the doubts.

Last week a 12 year old girl came to see me with a phobia of being trapped.

I asked her: What would it be like to have the problem gone? To not be afraid anymore?

She looked at me baffled. There was a long pause.

Then suddenly her face relaxed and lit up...

I'd be able to go on the Underground, I could get on a plane, I'd be able to be anywhere without worrying about my escape route.

After the session I received a grateful text from her mother:

For the first time she is open to the possibility that her phobia might not be permanent.

The gates had opened, even if only a little way. But just enough to let in the first light rays of possibility of change.

To allow some positive magical thinking to do its work

One forward step at a time.
