NIHR Biomedical Research Centre: Moorfields

NIHR Biomedical Research Centre: Moorfields Based at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, we are dedicated to vision research.

Our aim is to benefit patients by substantially improving the diagnosis, management and treatment of eye conditions. Our Biomedical Research Centre is dedicated to vision research. After two consecutive five-year terms starting back in 2007, we successfully received a new NIHR award in 2017 for another five years to support and further develop our research strategy. We continue to prioritise areas

where there is unmet patient need and where we have an outstanding track record of translational achievement and expertise at an international level. Around our research, we have built infrastructure, we are growing strategic partnerships and collaborations and building capacity to support and consolidate all the links of the translational bridge. As a result, new treatment techniques and practices that improve patient health are being brought through to clinical and surgical practice as quickly as possible, thereby benefiting patients, as well as the NHS, universities and the UK as a whole.

We will be diving into the world of genetics research! Our colleagues will showcase genetic epidemiology techniques across three common eye conditions: finding promising new drug targets for glaucoma, exploring whether UV-protective sunglasses may help prevent age-related macular degeneration, and building one of the largest genetic maps of diabetic eye disease in communities at higher risk.

Eye News has interviewed NIHR Doctoral Fellow Shafi Balal about his work developing an artificial intelligence model to predict the progression of keratoconus. Earlier diagnosis supports timely treatment and improved patient outcomes. Delays can lead to corneal scarring, worsening disease, and, in some cases, the need for a corneal transplant.

He also highlights the potential of oculomics, using AI-driven analysis of eye (anterior segment) data to detect and monitor systemic disease.

A Phase 2 feasibility study published in Nature Communications Medicine journal has shown that early vitrectomy surgery treatment for acute endophthalmitis can be potentially more beneficial to patients’ vision compared with the current antibiotic-first approach. This research was funded by an NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) Research for Patient Benefit grant, funding practical research that improves services in the hashtag .
