Hip arthroplasties are a very common surgical procedure, and they require a lot of imaging! As radiologists we need to be vigilant for complications, and in this post we talk about loosening. 🦴
Loosening occurs when the bone around the prosthesis is lost. It can be subtle with only a very thin lucent rim seen around the prosthesis, so you have to look carefully! 👀
Comparing to prior imaging is essential, because you are especially concerned when the lucent rim increases in size over time. ⏫
The location of the loosening can be described using Green Zones and Delete & Charnley Zones. 📍
