The BDD Foundation - The Body Dysmorphic Disorder Foundation

The BDD Foundation - The Body Dysmorphic Disorder Foundation With the right help and support BDD is treatable and beatable. It can affect both men and women, and makes sufferers excessively self-conscious.

The BDD Foundation is the only charity in the world exclusively dedicated to raising awareness and alleviating the suffering caused by Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). The term Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) describes a disabling preoccupation with perceived defects or flaws in appearance. They tend to check their appearance repeatedly and try to camouflage or alter the defects they see, often unde

rgoing needless cosmetic treatments. Onlookers are frequently perplexed because they can see nothing out of the ordinary, but BDD causes devastating distress and interferes substantially with the ability to function socially. The BDD Foundation cares greatly about the distress BDD causes but we are not a crisis service. Today, on Su***de Prevention Day, we want to acknowledge anyone who is struggling with thoughts of su***de right now.

If that’s you, please know that you are not alone. Suicidal thoughts can be a very real part of living with BDD, and the shame, isolation and distress that can come with it can feel completely overwhelming. But having these thoughts does not mean you are beyond help, and you do not have to face them on your own.

Please reach out. Tell someone you trust. Speak to a professional. Contact our e-helpline. Contact crisis services. Let somebody in, send them this video, even if you don’t have the words to explain what you’re feeling.

We know that some of these figures can feel really heavy, but sometimes, sharing these statistics is one of the most powerful ways to show just how serious and life altering BDD can be.

The people in these clips have each known what it feels like to be in that incredibly dark place - and every single one of them made it through to the other side. Their stories are a reminder that the way you feel right now does not have to be the way you feel forever.

If you’re struggling today, please stay. There is support, there is hope, and there is a life beyond the pain you’re experiencing right now 💙

📢 Conference workshop announcement

Often people with BDD find that they are far kinder and more understanding towards others than they are towards themselves. Self-criticism, shame and guilt can become deeply ingrained, making it difficult to respond to setbacks with the warmth and encouragement needed for recovery.

In this interactive workshop, we'll explore what self-compassion really means. Join Lisa & Merly in understanding how to respond to your own suffering with kindness, understanding and courage.

🎟️ Tickets available now

*Please note, workshop sessions will not be recorded due to their interactive nature and to protect the anonymity of those taking part. In-person tickets must be purchased to join.

& more!

This workshop is suitable for both those treating BDD, and those engaging in CBT treatment. A unique opportunity to hear from expert BDD clinicians, alongside lived experience input.

Kent TV reports on BDD 📰

Thank you to our Trustee Mike and his family for courageous sharing parts of their story and experience supporting a loved one with BDD.

As they so poignantly share 'You see someone looking in the mirror all the time, you might think that they think a lot of themselves, but the problem is actually very low self-esteem.'

Thank you for highlighting how drastically this can impact someone's life, the disturbingly high su***de rates associated with BDD, the treatment available, and messages of hope.

Reach out today on [email protected] - we are here to support you 💙

🎙️ Episode 43 of Beating BDD is now live!

In this episode, we speak with Scott Granet - an author, speaker, therapist and passionate advocate for people with lived experience of BDD.

Scott generously shares his experience of living with BDD across 50 years of his life, reflecting on the profound impact the condition has had at different stages of his life, and the childhood roots of his condition. He also talks about how his work as a therapist eventually helped him recognise and understand BDD in his own life - a journey that brought a new perspective to experiences he had carried for decades.

Alongside the challenges, Scott shares what life looks like today, including the people, passions and pursuits that bring him joy, meaning and purpose. His story offers an honest and hopeful reminder that, even after many years of living with BDD, it is possible to build a life with purpose and meaning.

Yesterday was the first ever BDD Awareness Day - and we want to thank you, our community, for showing up in the most incredible way.

Community is one of the BDD Foundation’s values, and my goodness, did we feel it yesterday.

Thank you to every single person who liked, commented, reshared, shared their own post or story, started a conversation, spoke on the livestream, or simply took a moment to stand alongside us. Seeing so many people come together to raise awareness of BDD was incredibly inspiring and so special to witness.

From everyone at the Foundation, thank you for helping make yesterday what it was.

We also want to acknowledge those who we know can’t always show up publicly because of the nature of BDD. We know there is a huge, often unseen community behind the people we see online - and we appreciate you too. We appreciate every single one of you.

Yesterday reminded us just how powerful our community is when we come together.

Thank you for being part of it 💙
