A mole that changes in size, shape or colour needs to be assessed by a dermatologist. Not monitored at home. Not photographed and compared over a few months. Seen.
Change is the clinical word that matters. A mole that's looked the same for years is a different matter entirely from one that's visibly shifting.
The ABCDE framework is a useful reference point: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Colour variation within a single lesion, Diameter increasing beyond the size of a pencil eraser, and Evolution - any change over time. Any one of these warrants assessment. A combination warrants prompt assessment.
At Dr Haus Dermatology, mole checks are carried out by dermatologists using dermoscopy, which allows examination of the internal architecture of a lesion in detail that isn't visible to the naked eye. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and is highly treatable when caught early. Delayed assessment narrows that window considerably.
