A colposcopy is a detailed examination of the cervix, va**na, and v***a using a colposcope - a magnifying device that helps detect signs of disease. It is often recommended after abnormal cervical screening result (smear test) and aids in diagnosing conditions like cervical cancer and its precursors.

🔹 Why is a colposcopy performed?

A colposcopy helps investigate abnormal Pap smear results by identifying abnormal cervical cells and guiding the next steps, such as monitoring, further testing, or treatment. It can also diagnose ge***al warts, cervicitis (inflammation of the cervix) and certain sexually transmitted infections.

🔹 What to expect during a colposcopy

This quick outpatient procedure is similar to a cervical screening test and typically lasts a few minutes. If abnormal areas are detected, a small tissue sample (biopsy) may be taken. Most women experience little to no pain, though mild discomfort or cramping is possible.

🔹 After the procedure

Light spotting or mild discomfort may occur for a couple of days. If a biopsy is taken, results will determine the next steps, which may include treatment to remove the abnormal cells or further monitoring.
