What is CBT therapy? 💭

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a type of talking therapy that helps people understand how their thoughts, feelings and behaviours are connected. It focuses on recognising unhelpful thinking patterns and developing healthier coping strategies for everyday life.

CBT can support people experiencing anxiety, depression, eating disorders, OCD, PTSD and stress. It is a practical, goal-focused therapy that helps individuals build tools and techniques to manage difficult emotions, thoughts and behaviours. ✨

At Ellern Mede, CBT is one of the therapeutic approaches used to support young people and families as part of a wider personalised treatment pathway. Through compassionate, specialist support, therapy can help individuals better understand themselves, develop coping strategies, and work towards recovery.

We are proud to share the positive feedback received following the recent QNIC focused review at Ellern Mede Ridgeway, with the final report now available.

The review highlighted a compassionate, highly individualised service where young people are supported by a strong multidisciplinary team delivering safe and thoughtful care. Particular strengths included autism-informed practice, therapeutic mealtime support, and personalised nutritional care.

Parents and carers also shared very positive feedback, recognising the supportive communication, involvement in care planning, education provision, and welcoming therapeutic environment - including calming spaces such as the Zen Den and garden.

The report also recognised the positive and cohesive culture across the service, with staff praised for their teamwork, openness, reflective practice, and shared commitment to supporting young people and families.

A huge thank you to all colleagues across EMR for the care, compassion, and dedication you continue to show every day.

Earlier this month, we celebrated International Nurses Day with small thank you gifts for our nursing teams across the hospital. 💙

A simple gesture to recognise the compassion, patience, and dedication our nurses bring to their roles every day - supporting patients through recovery with kindness, care, and understanding.

These lovely photos of the gift bags were shared by Yetty Agunbiade, Hospital Manager at Ellern Mede Barnet. ✨

Thank you to all of our nurses for everything you do.

“The eating disorder already comes with enough rules.”

In our latest blog Jessica Mackney our art psychotherapist, shares reflections and questions around movement during recovery - encouraging people to explore intention, rest, and their relationship with exercise in a kinder way.

“Questioning your relationship with exercise doesn’t mean you’re failing or going backwards. It means you’re paying attention.”

Tucked away at the bottom of the garden, our Zen Den offers a separate calm space for reflection, mindfulness, yoga, and gentle wellbeing activities. 🌿

Designed to feel peaceful and grounding, the space gives patients somewhere quiet to pause, breathe, and reconnect away from the busyness of the day.

Whether it’s used for yoga sessions, creative reflection, guided relaxation, or simply sitting amongst nature, the Zen Den encourages moments of calm, self-care, and stillness as part of recovery. ✨

At Ellern Mede, creating nurturing environments is an important part of supporting wellbeing, helping patients feel safe, supported, and able to slow down.

“Movement can be a complicated thing to navigate.”

In this new blog with Jessica Mackney explores the relationship between movement, exercise, and eating disorder recovery - reflecting on how movement can become tied to guilt, pressure, and self-worth.

“Movement is praised; rest is questioned.”

A thoughtful and compassionate read for anyone navigating recovery or supporting someone with an eating disorder.

Creating a sense of community is at the heart of what we do 💚

At Ellern Mede, recovery isn’t something anyone has to face alone. Through shared activities - from time spent in the garden to creative sessions like henna and self-care - patients are given space to connect, support one another, and feel part of something.

Community also means having your voice heard. Through regular community meetings, patients are encouraged to share their thoughts, give feedback, and play an active role in shaping their experience within the service.

These moments help build confidence, encourage expression, and remind people that they are not alone on their journey. A strong, supportive community can make all the difference in recovery ✨

Did you know…

- 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem each year in England.
- 1 in 5 people experience a common mental health problem in any given week.
- 1 in 5 children and young people aged 8 to 25 have a probable mental health problem.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re reminded just how many people are affected - and why support, understanding and early intervention matter so much.

No one should feel alone in what they’re going through 💚
