Today is International Day of Sign Languages.

Spoken language is not always the easiest or most accessible route to communication. That is why we are passionate advocates for AAC, Augmentative and Alternative Communication, which includes sign-supported communication, symbol boards, and high-tech speech-generating devices.

AAC does not replace speech. It supports it, builds confidence, and gives children a voice while their communication skills develop.

We see every day the difference it makes to their lives and their families.

September starts with SEND Tribunal hearings…

And for us, that means another busy month supporting children, young people and families through the SEND Tribunal process.

Today is International Literacy Day, and for us, it is a moment to highlight something we see every day in our work.

Literacy starts long before a child picks up a book. It begins with the ability to understand and use language, build vocabulary, follow a story, and express ideas. For children with speech and language differences, these foundations can be harder to establish, and that can affect their reading and writing as they grow.

At SL Therapy London, our specialist therapists focus on building the communication skills that underpin every aspect of learning.

As the new school term begins, here are three simple ways to support your child's speech, language and communication at home.

Give them time to talk. After a busy school day, avoid lots of questions straight away. Give them time to decompress and share when they are ready.

Keep language simple. When giving instructions, break information into manageable steps and use visual reminders where helpful.

Make communication part of everyday life. Chatting over dinner, sharing a book, playing a game or talking about their interests all create natural opportunities for language.

Small moments of connection make a big difference. If you have concerns about your child's communication development, our specialist team is here to help.

Mencap's theme, this year "Do you see me?", highlights the importance of people with learning disabilities being truly seen, heard, valued, and included within society, education, healthcare, and everyday life.

At S L Therapy London, we see every child and young person as far more than a diagnosis or a label. Communication is deeply connected to identity, relationships, emotional wellbeing, self-advocacy, and participation in the world around us.

Many individuals with learning disabilities experience barriers to having their voices understood and their needs recognised. As Speech and Language Therapists, we have an important role in supporting meaningful communication, accessibility, inclusion, and ensuring that every individual has opportunities to express themselves in ways that work for them.

This week is an opportunity to reflect on how we can all create environments where children, young people, and adults with learning disabilities feel respected, listened to, and empowered.

Because everyone deserves to be seen. Everyone deserves to be heard.
