Representation and mentorship can have a lasting impact on a career in biomedical science.

For Black History Month, Andrew Osei-Bimpong CSci, CMgr, MSc, FIBMS reflects on more than three decades in the profession, the people who encouraged him to progress and why he is committed to supporting the next generation of Black biomedical scientists.

“In the very early 90s, as a young Black man at the time, seeing people who looked like me who had achieved success in biomedical science inspired me to progress in my own career, though they were few and far between.”

Now a Site Laboratory Manager, Andrew has helped mentor and support at least a dozen Black biomedical scientists into senior and leadership roles.

More than 250 learners joined our Certificate of Expert Practice (CEP) programmes this year, supported by 50 expert tutors.

Alongside the programmes themselves, 2026 saw the move to a new in-house learning platform, designed to make learning more accessible, collaborative and connected.

With four of the five CEP programmes achieving recommendation rates of 96% or higher, Deirdre McLaughlin and IBMS colleagues reflect on the transition, learner feedback and what comes next.

Congratulations to IBMS Past President Joanna Andrew, who has been elected to the Board of Directors of the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science (IFBLS).

Joanna was elected at the General Assembly of Delegates in Chiba, Japan, and will serve on the Board for the 2026–2028 term.

“I am delighted to be elected to the board and I look forward to supporting the IFBLS in its mission to increase the recognition and visibility of Biomedical laboratory science across the globe.”

Joanna also joined biomedical laboratory scientists from around the world at the 36th World Congress, discussing shared challenges including AI, workforce, sustainability and emerging infectious diseases.

A world-first Phase 3 trial is investigating whether vaccination during pregnancy could help protect babies against life-threatening Group B Strep (GBS) infection.

Supported by the NIHR, the BEATRIX study is recruiting pregnant women across 10 UK hospitals to evaluate an investigational maternal GBS vaccine.

GBS is the most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies and can cause sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis.

Representation in this research is particularly important. Serious GBS infection disproportionately affects Black and Asian babies, and the study is encouraging eligible women from these communities to take part.
