🩺🔬💬 In my latest article I describe how medical comorbidities commonly seen in children with autism spectrum disorder - gastrointestinal disturbances, immune and inflammatory dysregulation, mitochondrial and metabolic dysfunction, nutritional deficiencies, and thyroid or hormonal issues - can amplify behavioural symptoms and reduce responsiveness to interventions. I recommend a stepwise, whole‑child laboratory evaluation: begin with basic hematology and biochemical panels, then proceed to targeted tests (nutritional and metabolic markers, inflammatory and immune assays, gut microbiome and permeability assessments) and, when clinically indicated, advanced investigations such as infection panels, autoantibody testing (including FRAT) or genomic analysis. Identifying treatable medical factors often leads to measurable improvements in sleep, irritability, communication and functional outcomes, and it can make therapeutic interventions more precise and effective.
All investigations should be ordered and interpreted by a qualified clinician; this article is informational and does not replace medical advice.
