Worried about bisphosphonate side effects? Don’t make a treatment decision based on fear alone.

Bisphosphonates are widely used to reduce fracture risk in people with osteoporosis, but like all medicines, they can cause side effects.

The important part is understanding what is common, what is rare, and what needs medical attention.

You may experience:

Heartburn or reflux
Stomach discomfort or nausea
Muscle, joint or bone pain

Rare complications, including osteonecrosis of the jaw and atypical femoral fractures, can occur, particularly in certain circumstances and with longer-term treatment.

That does not mean you should stop treatment yourself.

If you are experiencing side effects, your clinician can review your symptoms, fracture risk, treatment duration and whether another treatment approach may be appropriate.

The right question isn’t simply “Does this medication have side effects?”

It is:

“How does its benefit compare with its risks in my situation?”

We’ve explained the common and rare side effects, warning signs and what to discuss with your doctor in our full article.

Comment “SIDE EFFECTS” and we’ll send the article directly to your DM.

Your bones don’t just need movement. They need a reason to adapt. 🦴

Walking is great for your health—and it does place load through your skeleton.

But here’s what many people miss:

Different activities create different levels and types of mechanical loading.

Your bones respond to the forces placed on them through a process called bone remodelling. Appropriate loading can stimulate bone cells and help maintain skeletal strength.

That’s why a complete bone-health exercise routine can include:

🚶 Weight-bearing activity
Walking, brisk walking and stairs.

🏋️ Resistance training
Progressive exercises that challenge your muscles and skeleton.

🦘 Appropriate impact exercise
For people who are suitable for it, activities such as jumping can provide a greater mechanical stimulus than normal walking.

⚖️ Balance training
Important for stability and reducing fall risk.

The takeaway?

Don’t abandon walking. Build on it.

Walking can be your foundation. The right resistance and impact exercises can provide additional skeletal stimulus when appropriate.

And more loading isn’t automatically better.

If you have osteoporosis, previous fractures, significant bone loss, severe back pain, joint problems or balance difficulties, higher-impact exercise may not be suitable without professional assessment.

⚠️ DISCLAIMER: Please speak with your healthcare practitioner, physiotherapist or qualified exercise professional before starting or progressing an exercise programme, particularly if you have osteoporosis or a history of fractures.

This is one of the most misunderstood questions in bone health.

The honest answer is: bone can respond to treatment, but “reversal” is not guaranteed for everyone.

Osteoporosis treatments can strengthen bone and reduce the likelihood of fractures. Some medicines work by slowing bone breakdown, while others stimulate bone formation.

But medication is only one part of the picture.

A comprehensive osteoporosis strategy may include:

• Adequate calcium, vitamin D and protein to provide the building blocks for bone.

• Progressive resistance and appropriate weight-bearing exercise to provide the mechanical stimulus bone needs.

• Medication when fracture risk is high enough to warrant it. Lifestyle measures alone are not a substitute for medication when someone has a sufficiently high fracture risk.

• Ongoing review, rather than assuming one treatment will work forever.

And there’s an important distinction:

Improving bone density ≠ eliminating osteoporosis.

The real goal is to strengthen bone and reduce future fracture risk as much as possible.

So if you’ve been told you have osteoporosis, don’t assume the diagnosis means your bones can only get worse.

But don’t rely on supplements, exercise or a single DEXA result either.

You need a strategy built around your individual fracture risk.
