World Federation for Medical Education - WFME

World Federation for Medical Education - WFME Enhancing the quality of medical education worldwide Foundation. The Constitution was revised in 1988, in 1994, and further amended in April 2014.

WFME came into existence in September 1972 at a meeting in Copenhagen, when its Constitution was signed by representatives of the Regional Associations for Medical Education, by the representative of the Director-General of the World Health Organization, by the President of the World Medical Association, and other witnesses. The Constitution was drawn up by a WFME Planning Group which met in Mainz

in April 1972 with the support of the Josiah Macy Jr. The concept of WFME originated much earlier, at a meeting of medical educators in New Delhi in 1966. As well as being registered in England and Wales, WFME is registered in France since July 2015.

WFME Symposium at AMEE 2026.

On Tuesday 25 August, WFME presented its Declaration on Institutions’ Responsibility to Support Physicians in Postgraduate Education, in a 90 minute symposium at the Austria Center Vienna.

The Declaration places responsibility for a safe, supported and educationally sound training environment where it belongs: with institutions, not with individual doctors in training.

✨WFME at AMEE 2026, Vienna 🇦🇹
Our team joined the global medical education community at the Austria Center Vienna from 22 to 26 August, for a week of conversation, reconnection and new collaboration.
Representing WFME: President Prof Ricardo León Bórquez, Vice-President Dr Geneviève Moineau, Executive Director Dr Marisa Ni**od, President-elect Prof Emiola Olapade-Olaopa, Jana Cohlová and Barbora Hrabalová.
Across the week, our leadership reconnected with the wider WFME network, our assessors, and Executive Council members, and met many new colleagues for the first time. It was also the week we introduced the future leadership of WFME to the network.
We closed by hosting a social for WFME Executive Council members and assessors. Thank you to everyone who joined us.

We are delighted to share that Dr Marisa Ni**od, MD, MPH, has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).

Dr Ni**od is a highly accomplished physician and global health leader with more than 13 years of experience in clinical medicine, public health, medical education, and health systems leadership. She will guide WFME’s international Secretariat and support our mission to strengthen the quality of medical education worldwide.

She has held senior leadership roles across the Caribbean, including Chief Medical Officer, Past President of the Trinidad and Tobago Medical Association, and Chief Executive Officer of the Caribbean Association for Oncology and Haematology. She has also worked with the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

We warmly welcome Dr Ni**od to WFME and look forward to the vision and leadership she will bring.
