This Mental Health Awareness Week, remember: your mental health matters. 💚

At the British College of Osteopathic Medicine, we understand the importance of supporting our students’ mental health and wellbeing throughout their studies. Alongside welfare support and counselling services, all students have access to our Student Assistance Programme, provided by Health Assured.

Through the programme and the Wisdom Wellbeing app, students can access a range of wellbeing resources designed to support both mental and physical health, including mindfulness tools, yoga videos, breathing techniques, mood trackers, mini health checks, and personalised 4-week wellbeing plans.

Students also have access to confidential counselling via telephone or video call, as well as a 24-hour emergency helpline whenever support is needed.

Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, but support is always available, so no one has to face challenges alone.

It's day 6 of World Osteopathic Healthcare Week!

As Osteopaths, we're passionate about supporting our patients to move and feel better. Combining clinical knowledge with hands-on treatment, Osteopaths aim to address the root cause of discomfort, not just the symptoms.

At the BCOM Clinic, we focus on delivering care that supports recovery, improves function, and helps prevent issues from returning.

We're continuing to celebrate WOHW 🎉

Another benefit of Osteopathy, is its suitability for patients of all ages and stages of life. From supporting growing bodies, to helping busy adults manage everyday strain, to maintaining mobility and comfort later in life, treatment is always adapted to the individual.

At the BCOM Clinic, we take a whole-body approach, considering your lifestyle, movement, and overall wellbeing to provide care that fits you.

📣 New patient appointments available in our Headache Clinic 📣

Headaches can be debilitating. Osteopathy can help to prevent migraine and tension headache symptoms by addressing strain throughout the musculoskeletal system using gentle manipulative techniques.

Our team will listen to your concerns, give you a headache diagnosis wherever possible, make sure you are safe to treat, and then work with you on a tailor-made treatment and management plan. This may include therapeutic exercises and lifestyle advice.

We will work alongside your existing healthcare team, and may first need to refer you for prior medical evaluation if your headache has any concerning features.

All consultations are provided by final year students, supervised by an experienced headache-trained osteopathic tutor.

On Monday, BCNO Group research department Dr Katerina Vafeiadou, Dr William Gowers and collaborators Dr Philip Bright and Joanna Callaghan hosted a patient and public involvement session, facilitated by Health Sciences University 'Sharing Patient and Community Experience (SPaCE)' group.

The SPaCE group contributed to co-designing parts of our methodology for a collaborative project between the BCNO Group and Health Sciences University, funded by the Osteopathic Foundation.

Our research focuses on using a think-aloud approach to explore the acceptability of body mapping as a way to support conversations around touch comfort in treatment settings.

The session stimulated valuable discussions and insights, which we’ll now be incorporating into the next phase of the study before sharing feedback with the group ahead of data collection.

We also had a student join us, who not only contributed to the discussion but is also producing a reflective piece on their experiential learning about research through involvement in PPIE activity.

We’ll be sharing further updates as this work progresses!
