👏 Congratulations to Christopher Chessun, Bishop of Southwark, who was celebrated at a special valedictory Eucharist ahead of his retirement this month.

During the service, the Bishop thanked Professor Kathy Fan, Professor Michael Edmonds, and the wider multidisciplinary team at King's College Hospital for the care he has received over past years.
Following a serious road traffic collision, the Bishop sustained extensive facial injuries and required urgent surgery led by Professor Fan to repair multiple facial fractures. He has also received ongoing care under Professor Edmonds and his team.

💬 Reflecting on the occasion, Professor Fan said: "It was deeply humbling to hear from so many members of the congregation about the difference Bishop Christopher's recovery made, not only to him personally, but also to the many people whose lives he continued to touch through his ministry and community work. It was a powerful reminder that the work we do can have an impact far beyond the individual patient."

We are incredibly proud of Professor Fan, Professor Edmonds and the entire King's team, whose expertise, dedication and compassion helped Bishop Christopher return to the vital work he has carried out so faithfully over the years.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has today rated surgical care at King’s College Hospital as ‘Good’ overall, following an inspection in April this year. It was previously rated as ‘Requires Improvement’.

The new rating reflects the significant improvements put in place by staff who deliver some of the busiest surgical services in the country.

The CQC praised staff for being visible and approachable, and found a strong culture of learning from incidents.

Matthew Trainer, Chief Executive at the Trust, welcomed the CQC’s findings:

“It is great to see the hard work of our teams recognised. Patients should feel confident they will receive high-quality surgical care when they come to King’s”

🩸As part of our , the King’s Liver Health team welcomed patients, visitors and colleagues to the Golden Jubilee Wing yesterday and Queen Elizabeth Hospital today, for an awareness event focused on viral hepatitis and liver health.

People stopped by to learn more about hepatitis B and hepatitis C, liver health, prevention, testing and treatment. Throughout the event, our team answered questions, challenged common myths about hepatitis and encouraged open conversations to help reduce stigma.

💬 Carlos Moro, ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) and Engagement Manager in the Viral Hepatitis team at King’s Liver Service, said:

“One of the highlights of the day was seeing 25 people choose to have a free finger-prick hepatitis B and hepatitis C test. We are delighted that all tests were negative, but the real success is that 25 more people now know their hepatitis status. Knowing your status is the first step towards protecting your liver health, accessing care if needed, and helping achieve the World Health Organization's goal of eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat.”

Ahead of , we are excited to be collaborating with partners across the region on the launch of the South East London Primary Care Blood-Borne Virus (BBV) Opt-out Testing Day.

Led by our team at the South East London Viral Hepatitis Operational Delivery Network (ODN), this project adds routine HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C screening into everyday GP blood tests.

▪️ How does it work?

On 28 July, if your South East London GP requests a routine kidney blood test (also known as a U&E or renal function test), it may automatically include these screening tests.

We are proud to host this partnership alongside local GPs, laboratory services, and patient organisations. If patients do not wish to be tested, they can simply let their GP/clinician know.
