Last night we lit up Hambleden Wing at King’s College Hospital to mark World Patient Safety Day.

Patient safety is a priority across our hospitals and our Patient Safety Partners are helping to make care safer for patients.

Patient Safety Partners are members of the public, often King’s patients, who work alongside our staff members to influence and improve patient safety at the Trust. They help make sure our focus is always on patients, carers, and families.

Laura (pictured), one of our new Patient Safety Partners, is eager to support patients living with a diverse range of long-term conditions to understand their day-to-day realities.

Laura said: “My core focus is advocating for those who feel unheard or uncomfortable speaking up, ensuring their insights drive tangible, lasting improvements in patient safety."

We welcomed Dr Rosena Allin-Khan to King's this week to witness the impact of our long-standing partnership with Catch22's Redthread service.

Together, we pioneered Europe's first hospital-based violence prevention scheme, supporting vulnerable young people during critical 'reachable moments' in A&E.

UPDATE: Services have been restored at Beckenham Beacon

Following the burst water pipe at Beckenham Beacon last week, most services are now operating as normal.

The only service that remains temporarily affected is Diagnostics. Patients whose appointments need to be cancelled or rescheduled are being contacted directly by the team.

If you have an appointment at Beckenham Beacon and have not been contacted, please attend as planned.

During , we’re sharing Dr Kai Newton’s inspirational story, from surviving cancer to becoming a doctor. 💙

17 years ago, Kai was a patient at King’s, undergoing treatment for a brain tumour. Now he’s a doctor, caring for patients at the same hospital that saved his life.

Kai said: “During my cancer treatment, I was surrounded by an incredible team of medical specialists who inspired me to follow in their footsteps.

“There are definitely ‘pinch me’ moments when I can’t believe I am working as a doctor, in one of the hospitals that saved me. Being a cancer survivor and a doctor gives me a deeper connection with patients.”

Dr Reilly, Consultant Physiotherapist in Chronic Respiratory Disease at King's, has won the prestigious National Institute for Health and Care Research Rising Research Leaders Prize.

This national award celebrates 20 exceptional leaders who go above and beyond to find new, innovative, and inclusive ways to help patients. Dr Reilly was recognised for his incredible work helping people manage chronic breathlessness.

📱 MyChart, our app and website for patients and carers, recently registered its 1 millionth patient across King’s and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust’.

One MyChart user at King’s shared why it is helping them take greater control over their healthcare. Venyah Kowalik, who is under the care of our Rheumatology and Hepatology teams, told us about her experience:

💬 “MyChart has made a positive difference for me because it allows me to directly engage with information about my hospital appointments, changes in medication, test results and clinic letters. It allows me to see this information directly without having to call the hospital and speak with staff directly.

“I find access to the test results useful because I don't need to get them redone at my GP, I can just show my GP the results from the hospital when they review my medications.”

📸 It’s , and we’re celebrating our physiotherapists.

Every day, our 250 physiotherapists deliver vital, life-changing care to patients across our hospitals.

⛷️ Sarah Booker, Clinical Lead Physiotherapist from our Musculoskeletal outpatient physio team shared:

“As a competitive ski slalom racer, I spent a lot of time in physio departments as a kid. My knees took a bit of a battering, but Maggie, my physio, was amazing! She inspired me.

“Fast forward 25 years, and I’m now an Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Practitioner. My knees are doing pretty well these days, and I can honestly say I’ve had an amazing career.

“Some of my highlights? Being the physiotherapist for a bronze medal-winning Taekwondo athlete at the London 2012 Olympics, and travelling the world as a Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps.

“Physiotherapy isn’t just a career. It’s a vocation. It becomes part of who we are.

“I’m incredibly grateful to Maggie for inspiring that journey all those years ago and for the incredible profession that has given me so many opportunities since.”
