What does your AMH level really mean?
Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) is one of the most commonly requested fertility blood tests—but it is also one of the most misunderstood.
AMH is a valuable marker of ovarian reserve, helping estimate the number of eggs remaining in the ovaries. However, AMH does not measure egg quality, natural fertility, or your ability to conceive. Women with low AMH can still achieve a natural pregnancy, while women with high AMH may still experience fertility challenges. This is why AMH should never be interpreted in isolation.
At London Fertility Clinic, we assess your fertility using a comprehensive, evidence-based approach that combines AMH, age, antral follicle count (AFC), ultrasound findings, menstrual history, previous surgery, medical history, and your individual reproductive goals. Together, these factors provide a much more accurate picture than a single blood test alone.
AMH is particularly helpful in predicting how the ovaries may respond during IVF treatment, allowing fertility specialists to individualise stimulation protocols and minimise the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). It is not a reliable predictor of embryo quality, implantation, miscarriage, or live birth.
