With just one more sleep to go, we'd like to give you our greatest tip of all for the final day of our Christmas countdown..

ENJOY YOURSELF!😊

You deserve to have a fantastic day with your loved ones. In the quest to make Christmas healthy, don’t forget that this time is all about spending quality time with the people around you.

One day will not ruin a years progress, so be mindful whilst also recognising that it is okay to let your hair down every once in a while. You don’t have to say no to every mince pie or Christmas dinner invitation, make time to see or speak to family and friends, and enjoy all of the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the festive season.

Christmas only happens once a year after all!🎄

We've said it once, and we'll say it again.. GET YOUR SLEEP!💤

Although Christmas is not a time we often link with sleep, it is one of the most important factors to consider when it comes improving our overall health. Aim to sleep around
seven hours a night, placing the emphasis on the quality of your sleep, as well as quantity. As hard as it is, with Santa coming and whatnot, try and get into a positive bed time routine by limiting technological distractions and winding down before bed - why not sip a hot brew and read for half an hour?☕📚

You will wake up feeling better, your body will have time to repair from the festive damage that alcohol, overeating and heightened stress levels your body has endured, and you will be far more prepared to take on the Christmas madness.

We know it can be a little bit more difficult to find the time to exercise over the Christmas period! The days seem to fly over, and you can get a bit caught up in all of the festivities..

Here's some ideas to make the most of the festive season, whilst staying fit!
➡️ Get the family involved and play some interactive video games that get you up and moving.
➡️ Turn up the Christmas songs and get grooving!
➡️ Wrap up warm and go for a walk with friends.
➡️ Play the postman - go for a brisk walk whilst you drop off your Christmas cards.
➡️ Boxing day sales are a perfect time to grab some bargains and get your legs moving!

Considering a detox diet after Christmas?

Many ‘detox diets’ claim they can remove toxins from the body. This idea is nonsense.

The human body is a finely tuned system. The kidneys, liver, lungs and digestive system do a very good job of removing toxins from the body. If they didn’t, we’d all feel extremely unwell and would most likely need to be in hospital.

Detox diets are normally very restrictive, usually resulting in short-term weight loss. However, the lack of protein may lead to a loss of muscle mass and in the long term, this combined with an increase in appetite which tends to follow a restrictive diet will likely lead to weight regain.

Instead, we encourage you to consider your other options. Pace yourself. Take a deep breath and make gradual changes. Get in touch if you’d like to schedule a free discovery call with our dietitian who can help point you in the right direction. We are here to support you and are ready when you are.

Developing an exercise habit can be challenging at the best of times but research suggests that many of us see a decline in our activity levels during the colder months. We’ve got 2 ideas for making exercising that little bit easier....

1) Have you got the right gear? Being prepared for the weather is key to your success. Who was it who said ‘there’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing’. We think they were on to something!
2) Find a buddy. Making exercise social can be the difference between exercising and not exercising. Who can you recruit to join in on your activities this winter?

3 ways to practice mindful eating this Christmas...

1. Eat without distraction. Easier said than done when surrounded by friends and family. But do what you can to minimise distractions. Switch the TV off. Pop your phone in the next-door room.
2. Slow down and enjoy food with all your senses. Notice the tastes, the smells and the textures.
3. Unsure if you are comfortably full? Take a pause before deciding if you’ve had enough to eat.

Make sleep a priority this winter!

Getting a good night’s sleep is essential to all aspects of health. Don’t neglect it this winter. Here are our top tips:
➡️ Practice a digital detox by avoiding screen time before bed! Blue light emitted from our devices can trick our brains into thinking it is still day time and delay your readiness for sleep.
➡️ Limit caffeine. Caffeine can stay in our system for up to six hours so that afternoon cup of tea or coffee may still be in your system around bedtime. This may compromise deep sleep! Swap to decaf or herbal teas in the afternoon.
➡️ Write your thoughts down. At Christmas it can feel as though there is a never- ending list of things you need to do or remember. Calm your mind by putting pen to paper before going to bed.

Well planned and well-balanced snacks can be an effective way to manage appetite, keep hunger at bay and top your diet up with important nutrients.

A combination of a slow-release carbohydrate with a protein and or a fat source tends to keep energy and blood sugar levels stable.

Here are a few of our festive favourites to keep you balanced during the silly season...

150-170g Greek yogurt, topped with 1 tablespoon mixed dried fruit and nut mix and a dusting of cinnamon and nutmeg for a taste of Christmas.

2-3 x oat cakes topped with a slice of cheese of your choice (we like a strong cheddar!) and a dollop of cranberry sauce or chutney.

1-2 x dates filled with nut butter of your choice and dipped in dark chocolate.

A slice of rye bread, top with a slice of smoked salmon and ribbons of cucumber. Finish with a squeeze of lemon.

2 x satsumas and 8 walnut halves for an easy snack on the go.
