Working with self-harm and su***de can place clinicians in some of the most complex and emotionally demanding situations in mental health practice.

Alongside questions of risk and intervention, the work can evoke powerful feelings in professionals - anxiety, responsibility, helplessness, frustration and uncertainty.

A psychoanalytic perspective offers another way of thinking about these experiences: considering not only what is happening for the patient, but what is happening within the relationship between patient and professional.

Each seminar begins with advance reading, followed by a short presentation and clinical discussion. Participants will also be encouraged to bring situations and dilemmas from their own work for discussion, with all clinical material highly anonymised.

The series is aimed particularly at clinicians working with people at risk of su***de and self-harm, and is also open to practitioners across psychotherapy, psychoanalysis and mental health, including psychiatry, nursing, social work and the voluntary sector.

When working in mental health, relationships are never just the backdrop to the work - they are central to it.

The emotional demands of clinical practice can affect how we think, feel and respond. At times, we may find ourselves drawn into difficult dynamics that can leave us feeling stuck or even make situations harder to manage.

Therapeutic Relationships in Forensic and Adult Mental Health Settings is an eight-part online course exploring how psychoanalytic thinking can help us better understand what happens:

โ€ข between patients and practitioners
โ€ข within ourselves
โ€ข and between members of staff teams

Marcus Evans, psychoanalyst, will be in conversation with mental health nurse Jo Osimuwa across eight sessions addressing some of the most challenging areas of mental health practice, including borderline and psychotic states of mind, suicidal risk, adolescence, violence, deliberate self-harm and anti-social personality disorder.

Drawing on Winnicott's concept of holding and the works of composers including Schubert and Shostakovich, the discussion reflects on trauma, totalitarianism, memory and mourning - and considers what psychoanalysis can offer in response to today's global conflicts, rising authoritarianism, climate crisis and social fragmentation.
