PND can often feel lonely, isolating and disempowering. Finding some sense of control, purpose can help ease difficult emotions, bring some calm along with little joyful moments in your life.

Setting yourself manageable daily goals such as getting dressed, going for a walk or having a healthy meal can help you feel less overwhelmed.

Being kind to yourself, using positive self-talk and accepting that it is OK to struggle, that it is OK to look after yourself can boost your mental wellbeing.

Taking some time to do activities that bring you joy, whether that is reading, watching a favourite TV series, painting can help reconnect with yourself.

What brings you joy? What helps you ease your difficult emotions? Let us know in comments.

This year marks the 7th Annual Black Maternal Mental Health Week UK, coordinated by and it revolves around three major themes.
JOY – Celebrating Black motherhood and the importance of culture, connection, friendships and healing.
JUSTICE – Highlighting the need for a change to the persistent inequality in Black mothers’ experiences in the maternal and mental healthcare sphere.
JOURNEY – Recognizes the complexities and layers that exist in maternal mental health both during the antenatal and postnatal stages and these can include birth trauma, baby loss, postnatal depression, relationships, returning to work and identity loss.
Black mothers are at a higher risk of suffering from postnatal depression and are less likely offered treatment and support.
At APNI, we offer support to mothers, partners and family members that experience difficult times during the perinatal journey. We stand in solidarity with black women and the and their invaluable work in the equality within the maternal mental health care.

Be gentle with yourself and try not to put yourself in situations that you know are likely to leave you feeling more upset or overwhelmed. You don’t need to attend every social event, especially when you’re already finding things difficult.

It’s okay to take a step back and give yourself some breathing space. If something can wait, consider putting it off or letting someone else take care of it for now. You can come back to these things when you’re feeling a little better and have more energy.

Reach out to us for a friendly chat and support.
