July is UV awareness month

UV (ultraviolet) radiation is part of the natural energy produced by the sun and is transmitted in form of waves.

The cornea in your eyes are the most sensitive tissues in your body, so it’s very important to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. 👀
Wear 100% UV protection glasses (UV 400). 👓
Polarised lenses help with glare and especially helpful in summer. 🕶️
Remember snow ❄️, sand 🏝️ and water 🌊 can reflect 80% of UV rays.

Too much sun exposure in eyes can cause cataracts, eye cancer, photokeratitis (sunburnt eye), macular degeneration and pinguecula pterygium (growth on eye).

Remember not to over expose yourself and use an umbrella ☂️ if necessary or try keep in the shade, wear a cap 🧢 and put sunscreen🧴on!

🚨 Is your vision fading without you knowing it?

Glaucoma causes permanent damage with zero early warning signs.

👁️ The Cause
Fluid builds up in the eye, raising pressure and damaging the optic nerve.

⏳ High-Risk Groups
Age over 40 or family history
African, Caribbean, or Asian descent
Severe short-sightedness or blood pressure issues

⚠️ Symptoms
Gradual: Slow loss of side (peripheral) vision.
Emergency: Sudden eye pain, severe headache, redness, or haloes.

🛡️ Action Plan: Damage is irreversible, but early detection saves your sight.

June is cataract awareness month!

Cataracts are the leading cause of treatable vision loss worldwide, but many people do not notice the early signs because they develop slowly and without pain. Here is what you need to look out for:

🔹 Cloudy, blurry, or misty vision
🔹 Glare or halos around lights (especially when driving at night)
🔹 Colours looking faded, dull or yellowed
🔹 Frequent changes to your glasses prescription.

Age is the most common cause, but factors like diabetes, smoking, and UV sun exposure can also increase your risk.

The good news? Routine, safe surgery completely restores your sight! Protect your vision and book your eye exam today. 🩺
