What can an MRI of the jaw joint reveal?

A jaw joint MRI provides detailed images of the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) - the joints that connect your jaw to your skull and allow you to speak, chew and open your mouth.

Unlike an X-ray, MRI can provide detailed views of the soft tissues within and around the joint, including the articular disc, helping clinicians assess the structures involved in jaw movement and function.

A TMJ MRI may be recommended when investigating symptoms such as jaw pain, clicking or locking, restricted movement or persistent discomfort around the jaw and face.

What is Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain is pain that lasts longer than 3 months, often continuing even after an injury or illness has healed. Unlike short-term (acute) pain, it doesn’t always have a clear ongoing cause but it is very real and can significantly impact daily life.

It can feel different for everyone: aching, burning, stabbing, or constant discomfort, and it may affect sleep, mood, energy levels and overall wellbeing.

Chronic pain is not “just in your head” - it’s a complex condition involving the nervous system, brain, and body working together.

With the right support, understanding, and treatment plan, many people can find ways to better manage their symptoms and improve quality of life.

One of the biggest concerns patients have about an MRI is how long they’ll be in the scanner.

At Marris Medical, our state-of-the-art MRI technology is designed to produce exceptional image quality in around half the time of many traditional MRI scans. That means shorter scan times without compromising on the detail your specialist needs.

This is especially beneficial for patients who feel anxious, find it difficult to stay still, experience discomfort when lying down, or simply want a more efficient private healthcare experience.

Whether you’re having a targeted scan or a comprehensive health assessment, our advanced imaging technology delivers fast, accurate and high-quality results.

🎧 Let’s set up for a brain MRI.

Before the scan begins, there are a few important steps to make sure we get the best possible images while keeping you comfortable.

• Your head is gently positioned inside a specialised head coil, which helps capture detailed images of the brain.
• You’ll be given headphones because MRI scanners produce loud knocking and tapping sounds during the scan.
• We’ll make sure you’re comfortable and in the correct position before we start, as staying still is one of the most important parts of getting clear, high-quality images.
• Throughout the scan, you’ll be able to communicate with our team at any time, so you’re never alone.

Understanding what happens before an MRI can make the experience feel much less daunting and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

After experiencing a serious back injury during medical school, Dr Keith Bush developed a deep interest in understanding why patients with the same condition were often given vastly different diagnoses and treatment advice.

That curiosity led to pioneering research in the treatment of sciatica and disc herniations - helping change spinal practice worldwide.

His doctorate thesis and peer-reviewed research show that many large disc herniations resolve naturally over time if the pain can be controlled, avoiding unnecessary surgery for countless patients.

“Most large disc herniations don’t require surgical removal. If you can control the pain, the body has a chance to heal.” - Dr Keith Bush
