Joe Slyper, the UK's oldest Jewish man, our oldest Resident and the oldest male member of the United Synagogues, is celebrating an incredible milestone as he turns 107 years old today.
Born in 1919 and raised in East London, Joe has witnessed more than a century of extraordinary change. From handwritten letters to smartphones and artificial intelligence, he has seen the world transformed. Along the way, he has lived through five British monarchs and 24 Prime Ministers, from David Lloyd George to Keir Starmer. Despite his impressive age, Joe looks 20 years younger and is known for his warm smile.
In 1939, Joe volunteered for the British Army, training as a signaller and later becoming a Sergeant with the 9th Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment. The following year, he married the love of his life, Rose, at East London Synagogue. They shared a devoted marriage for 73 years until Rose's passing.
A much-loved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Joe has dedicated his life to his family, built a successful career, served his community and remained a passionate Tottenham Hotspur supporter throughout the decades.
Reflecting on his remarkable life, Joe says:
"I've had a good life. I feel blessed. And now I have time to enjoy the time I have left, playing games on my iPad."
Everyone at Nightingale Hammerson is delighted to celebrate Joe's extraordinary birthday and the incredible life he continues to lead. Joe's celebration is made even more special as Nightingale Hammerson is privileged to care for ten remarkable centenarians, each with their own unique story and a lifetime of memories to share.
Happy 107th birthday, Joe!
