I recently spoke to The Mail on Sunday about Crocs and foot health.

The headline is a little stronger than my own position. I wouldn’t describe Crocs as inherently bad footwear, and I wouldn’t warn people against wearing them.

For me, it’s more about recognising their limitations rather than treating them as an all-purpose shoe.

Crocs are lightweight, roomy, cushioned, easy to wash and can be very practical for short-distance casual wear, holidays and around water. They can also make sense in some clinical environments where prolonged walking is limited.

The research suggests that using the heel strap gives a more secure fit and changes walking mechanics compared with wearing Crocs loosely.

What the evidence does not currently show is that Crocs directly cause conditions such as plantar fasciitis, bunions, hammertoes or collapsed arches.

As with most footwear, the useful question isn’t simply whether a shoe is “good” or “bad”, but whether it’s appropriate for the person, activity and environment.

Swipe for my practical advice.
