Too many NHS hospitals are still losing valuable capacity to avoidable overnight stays in procedures that could be done as day cases. The BADS Directory of Procedures and National Dataset provides benchmarking data on day surgery performance, helping identify where improvements could be made.

The dataset shows where savings may be possible if BADS targets are met and what could be achieved within existing resources.

Imagine a BADS noticeboard in every Day Surgery Unit across the UK. That's the vision behind the new BADS Board Programme.

Designed to showcase the fantastic work taking place in Day Surgery Units and help grow the BADS community, the initiative is already gaining momentum.

All nurses have an important voice, and through BADS that voice can help shape practice on a local and national level.

Pictured at our Annual Conference are BADS President Karen Harries and keynote speaker Emma McCone, GIRFT National Lead for Pre-operative Assessment, whose work has helped connect perioperative teams across the country and supported the development of best practice.

Both Karen and Emma are nurses who are influencing practice nationally and locally, demonstrating the vital impact nurses can have on shaping services, developing colleagues and improving patient care.

To our wonderful fellow nurses - If you're passionate about the future of day surgery then use your voice and become part of the BADS professional community working to make day surgery the norm.

What can we learn from the day surgery teams at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust?

Our recent DSU Spotlight explores how they're increasing cases per list, developing new day case pathways and reducing pressure on inpatient beds.

From high‑volume hysteroscopy lists to new services supporting cancer screening and urgent ophthalmology care, this Spotlight offers an insight into how the team is adapting and developing its service.

Meet David Bunting, BADS' Immediate Past President and a Consultant in Upper GI and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Surgery at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

David is a strong advocate for day surgery and the important benefits it brings for patients, healthcare systems and the environment. For him, the most rewarding aspects of being a BADS Council member are working alongside inspirational colleagues with shared values and goals, learning from experts across the field and helping advance day surgery at a time when it matters most.

As David says:

"BADS brings together expertise, passion and collaboration to improve outcomes for patients and help tackle some of healthcare's biggest challenges. I feel honoured to have had the opportunity to serve."
