This is a complex one and interestingly more women than men experience hair loss (although not necessarily to the same extent.)
Around menopause women may loss hair around the temples or across the scalp.
Declining levels of estrogen are thought to be implicated but as Dr Greg Williams, FRCS (Plast)] says - hair loss is a complex thing and it important to get the right diagnosis.
It’s normal to lose around 100 hairs a day. If it coming out in clumps or in certain spots then you need to get it checked out to see if there’s an underlying cause.
You can also lose hair around the forehead and temporal regions if you pull your hair back too tightly - traction alopecia - fortunately this usually grows back if it doesn’t go in too long.
If it’s related to hormones and menopause then HRT may slow the process.
A spray containing minoxidil may also help some people as it improves blood supply to the hair follicles.
Some people find microneedling (with or without growth factors/stem cells/PRP) may help - it’s thought that the micro trauma if creates helps stimulate a healing response that in turn helps hair growth.
It’s a complicated and sometimes distressing thing.
What doesn’t work are caffeine shampoos - despite the claims.
If you have a dietary deficiency certain supplements may help - biotin is a popular one. Good hair growth needs a healthy diet with plenty of protein, vitamins and minerals.
There are some sprays that can make the hair look thicker and there’s also scalp micro pigmentation which gives the impression of a fuller head of hair. (Speak to
And women can have hair transplants too. Speak to Dr Greg Williams, FRCS (Plast)]
( btw I don’t get any kick back from mentioning these guys - I just trust their opinions having interviewed them many times.)
