For Nick, an active dad of two, sport has always been a big part of life. But what started as back and leg pain became something much more serious, affecting his ability to exercise, spend time with his family, and enjoy the things he loved most.

"My recovery time began to take longer, effective treatments became harder to find, and my symptoms got worse," says Nick. "It was beginning to severely limit my activities. I was missing out on things with my boys, couldn’t do my regular exercise, and it was affecting my wider health."

With his pain having such an impact on his life, Nick saw an orthopaedic surgeon to get to the root of the problem. An MRI and CT scan showed that his L5-S1 disc, the lowest cushion in the spine, was fused, and his L4-5 vertebrae had slipped, compressing a nerve root in his spine.

The surgeon presented Nick with multiple treatment options, including physiotherapy, injections and surgery. While physiotherapy and injections could have delayed Nick’s need for surgery, they didn’t offer a permanent solution.

With reservations about back surgery, Nick sought advice and was recommended getting second opinion from Professor David Choi, a neurosurgeon at The Wellington Hospital. After getting a referral, Nick discussed his treatment options with Professor Choi, who clearly laid out the benefits of surgery.

“It was clear very quickly that he excels as a neurosurgeon, and I knew I’d found the leading expert I needed!”

Nick arranged his surgery at The Wellington Hospital for eight weeks after his initial appointment, letting him fit it around his busy schedule.

“When I came round after the surgery, all the pain had gone,” Nick recalls. “The surgery has been completely life-changing. The severity of my pain was only truly clear when it was gone.

“The treatment and support I received during treatment, recovery in hospital and discharge have been outstanding.

“The kindness and care provided by the nurses and physios who, quite literally, got me back on my feet afterwards is something that will stay with me long after I am fully recovered.”

This World Heart Day, we're celebrating the patients who have trusted us with theirs.

From life-changing diagnoses to life-saving treatment, we're privileged to be part of so many journeys and inspired every day by the resilience and courage of the people we care for.

It's why sharing patient stories matters. They remind us that behind every procedure, scan and consultation is a person, a family and a future.

We're proud that more patients choose us for their cardiac care than any other independent provider, a reflection of the trust placed in our expert consultants, specialist teams and personalised approach to care.

Because every heartbeat matters. ❤️

PCOS has a new name.

🎥 Watch Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Nickkho-Amiry as she explains why polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS) is now known as polycystic morphology endocrine and metabolic syndrome (PMOS).

The new name reflects a growing understanding that this condition is about much more than the ovaries alone. It can affect many aspects of health, including hormones, metabolism, periods, ovulation, skin health, and fertility.

Everyone's experience is different. Some people may experience irregular periods, acne, excess hair growth, or challenges with fertility, while others may be affected in different ways.

Understanding the broader nature of PMOS can help people feel more informed, supported, and empowered to seek the care that's right for them. đź’™

This Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, we sat down with Professor Francis Vaz, Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon at The Harley Street Clinic, to discuss the symptoms to look out for, how thyroid cancer is diagnosed, and the treatment options available.

Thyroid cancer is the 20th most common cancer in the UK, accounting for just 1% of all new cancer cases. However, it is becoming more common. According to Cancer Research UK, rates of thyroid cancer have risen by 62% over the last decade and are projected to rise by a further 27% by 2038–2040.

That's why it's important to know the signs and symptoms to look out for. Treatment for thyroid cancer is usually most effective when it's found at an early stage, so getting any changes checked without delay can make a real difference.

🎥 Watch as Professor Vaz shares his expert insights.

How are embryos created using IVF and ICSI? ✨

Sam Bishop, Embryologist at the Lister Fertility Clinic, explains how embryos are formed in the laboratory using two advanced fertility techniques - IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) and ICSI (Intracytoplasmic S***m Injection). 🧬

Both methods involve combining eggs and s***m outside the body, but they differ in how fertilisation actually occurs.

At Lister Fertility Clinic, we believe everyone deserves access to compassionate and expert fertility care - regardless of body size. ✨

There’s a common misconception that all fertility clinics apply a strict upper BMI limit when offering treatment. While this is the case in some settings, it’s not how we do things at Lister Fertility Clinic.

We understand that fertility is deeply personal and complex. Whether you’re considering IVF, egg freezing, or any other treatment, your BMI is just one part of a much bigger picture. 🧬

16/09/2026

Intracytoplasmic s***m injection (ICSI) is a specialised form of IVF where a single healthy s***m is carefully injected into each egg. 🧬

The resulting embryos are cultured in our lab, and then a fertilised embryo is transferred to the female partner’s womb.

We often recommend ICSI if you’ve had several failed attempts to conceive because of male fertility problems, such as a low s***m count or issues with the s***m’s shape or how much they move. 💙

What is pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT)?

PGT is a way for us to check your embryos for any genetic abnormalities before they’re transferred to your womb, and we often do this testing as part of IVF treatment.

It helps us to see if any of your embryos have changes to their genetic makeup, so you’re able to make fully informed choices before you proceed. PGT IVF can help us choose the healthiest embryos to transfer and reduce the risk of any issues with your pregnancy, or the risk of your baby being born with a serious genetic disorder.

This kind of testing can raise difficult and emotional questions. One of our genetic counsellors will talk to you before you have any form of genetic testing of your embryos. They’ll help you understand exactly what happens during the process and talk through the potential implications of the tests.

Find out more about PGT on our website: https://www.hcahealthcare.co.uk/tests-and-scans/preimplantation-genetic-testing-pgt
