What is Dementia?

Dementia is not a single condition. It is an umbrella term used to describe a range of progressive conditions that affect how the brain works. Over time, dementia can impact memory, thinking, communication and the ability to carry out everyday tasks.

There are many different types of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia and Lewy body dementia. While it is more common in people over the age of 65, it can affect people of any age.

Around one million people in the UK are currently living with dementia, meaning many families are supporting a loved one through their journey.

Recognising the early signs and seeking advice can make a real difference. With the right support, families can better understand the condition and help their loved one continue to live with comfort, dignity and independence for as long as possible.

Top Tip: Managing Sundowning in Dementia 🌄

Sundowning is a common experience for some people living with dementia. As daylight fades, feelings of confusion, anxiety or restlessness can increase, making the late afternoon and evening particularly challenging.

If you are supporting a loved one, these simple approaches may help:

· Stay calm and offer reassurance. Avoid arguing and, if needed, step away briefly before returning with a calm approach.
· Maintain a familiar daily routine, with more demanding activities planned for the morning and quieter evenings.
· Encourage natural daylight and gentle activity during the day to help support healthy sleep patterns.
· If they repeatedly check doors or switches, a simple checklist can provide reassurance that everything has been done.
· Turn lights on before sunset to reduce shadows that may cause confusion or distress.
· Offer comforting sensory activities to help reduce restlessness and provide a calming focus.

If wandering at night is becoming a concern, simple safety measures such as door sensors, sensor mats or professional live-in or overnight care can provide additional peace of mind.

Every person living with dementia is unique, and finding the right approach often takes patience, understanding and compassionate support.
