☀️ Today’s Partial Solar Eclipse — Protect Your Eyes

This evening the UK gets its deepest solar eclipse since 1999. From Kingston, the eclipse begins at 6:17pm, reaches maximum at around 7:12pm with roughly 91% of the Sun covered, and ends at 8:06pm.   The Sun will be low in the west, so you’ll need a clear western horizon.

As optometrists, here’s our one message: never look directly at the Sun, even when 91% covered.

Safe ways to watch:
✅ Eclipse glasses certified to ISO 12312-2 — check them for scratches, holes or tears first, and discard if damaged
✅ Pinhole projection — pierce a small hole in card, stand with your back to the Sun and project the image onto a second sheet. A kitchen colander works brilliantly too
✅ Watch the Royal Observatory Greenwich live stream from 6:10pm
