You know exactly why you do it. And you keep doing it anyway.

That’s your ego, wearing a different mask each time, logic, responsibility, sometimes even piety. Most people can name their patterns and still can’t stop repeating them, because knowing a pattern and interrupting it live in two different parts of you.
Sacred Circuitry is a one day workshop where we map both, the four faculties that shape how you react, and how to catch the ego before it moves. Built on a model Imam al-Ghazali drew together nine centuries ago, and what neuroplasticity research is only now confirming about why it works.

No prior knowledge needed.

There is a particular kind of forgetting that happens after you are saved from something. While you are still inside the hardship you swear you will never take ease for granted again, and then the ease arrives and within a few weeks the whole thing has gone quiet and filed itself away until it barely feels real anymore.

You are not ungrateful when this happens. The mind simply encodes threat and holds onto it, because remembering danger is what once kept you alive, and it never gives relief the same treatment. The nervous system lets relief go almost as soon as it arrives, which is why your worst nights stay vivid for years while the times you were rescued blur within months.

Ashura sits in the calendar as a correction for exactly this. It marks the oldest deliverance we know, the day Musa and his people were saved at the water when there was no way out left, and it asks you to use that story as a mirror for your own. Think of the crossings you somehow made, the situations that resolved after you had run out of options, the version of you that was certain they would not get through and did.

Most of us were taught to mark the new year with a list of everything we want to become. Muharram asks for something harder. Not who you plan to be, but an honest look at who you already are.

This is muhasaba - Self-accounting. The practice of sitting with your own state before you rush to fix it. It is quiet work and it rarely feels productive, which is exactly why people skip it.

The Prophet ﷺ began the year from displacement, from leaving his home under threat. If the most significant year in our history started there, your heavy, uncertain, unresolved beginning is not a sign you are behind.

You can start the year from exactly where you are. You just have to be willing to look first.

Some moments from our “Reflection & Regulation room” at yesterday.

The room had visitors come and go and use the space to slow down, re-centre and feel energised to return to the main event. Alhamdulillah it was an honour to provide this space at such a fantastic event.

Eid Mubarak 🌙

Yesterday the ummah stood at Arafah, and whether you were there in body or in spirit, something was asked of you. To name what you have been holding. To trust that mercy is wider than your worst day, even when your nervous system insists otherwise.

May Allah accept the du’a your lips made, and the du’a your heart wanted to make but could not find the words for. May He soften what hardened in you this year, and return you to yourself more whole than you were.

From all of us at Ibn Sina Sanctuary ♥️

The Prophet ﷺ said there is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than today. That is the most generous offer in the Islamic calendar. Extended to every believer who turns toward Allah regardless of where they are, what they have done, or how far they feel they have strayed.

And yet for many people this day passes without that forgiveness actually landing. Not because Allah withheld it. Because they could not receive it.

We are often much better at seeking forgiveness than accepting it. The guilt stays after the du’a. The shame continues. The inner critic does not stand down. And we mistake that for sincerity when Ibn al-Qayyim was clear, that is not piety. That is the second trap.

The work on this day is not just to ask. It is to actually set down what you have been carrying and trust that Allah meant what He said.

If that feels impossible, it is worth sitting with. Our therapists hold space for exactly this kind of work.

Ramadan was a reset.
Dhul Hijjah is another one.

Most of us think of this month as belonging to the hujjaj and it does. But the spiritual atmosphere of these ten days extends to every believer, wherever they are. The scholars were explicit about this. The deeds of these days are beloved to Allah above all others. The invitation is universal.

What Dhul Hijjah offers, if you are willing to receive it, is the same thing Hajj offers at its core.
A deliberate pause from ordinary life. A turning toward Allah with intention.
A reckoning with who you have been and who you want to become.
An act of release of a habit, a resentment, a version of yourself you have been carrying too long.

You do not need to be in Makkah for that work. You need to be present to yourself.

This is what we hold space for at Ibn Sina Sanctuary. The inner journey that does not wait for a plane ticket.

If you want support for that work whether through therapy, reflection or something we are building that is almost ready, we are here.

Our tradition did not wait for Mental Health Awareness Week to tell us that self-examination matters.

Al-Ghazali, Ibn al-Qayyim, Ibn Sina, they all wrote about the relationship between the examined inner life and genuine wellbeing. Not as a therapeutic technique. As a spiritual obligation.

What neuroscience now confirms about writing and cognitive processing, the scholars understood through a different lens centuries ago. The mechanism is the same.

Name what is inside you.
Give it space.
See it clearly.
That is where change becomes possible.

This is what muhasaba actually is.

Not a ritual of self-criticism. A practice of honest witnessing.

We have been building something rooted in exactly this tradition. A space for private self-reflection that holds the Islamic framework at its core. It is almost ready. Watch this space. .space

If you want to go deeper into this work with someone trained to hold both the clinical and the spiritual dimension, our therapists are here too.
