If this photo from 2014 could tell a story, it would say: I was running mile after mile, but my body was struggling. I was under-eating, living with amenorrhoea, anaemic, and had little strength despite all the training.

At the time, I thought more running was the answer. Looking back, I realise health isn’t about how many miles you run or how lean you look. True health comes from balance, nourishing your body with enough protein and nutrients, building strength, recovering well, and supporting your hormones.

Longevity isn’t about pushing harder. It’s about building a body that is strong, resilient, and healthy for the long term.

Be kind to yourself. A homemade pizza or weekly treat won’t derail your health goals. It’s what you do consistently that matters most. Enjoy it, savour it, and leave the guilt behind

Small but mighty, sardines are one of nature’s nutritional powerhouses. Packed with protein, omega-3 fats, vitamin D, calcium and B12, they support heart health, brain function, strong bones and healthy ageing. As a low-mercury fish, they’re also a great sustainable choice. A simple addition to your plate with impressive health benefits.

Are You Ageing Faster Than You Need To?

Regularly relying on foods such as sugary cereals, pastries, biscuits, sweets, crisps, takeaways, fizzy drinks and processed ready meals can increase inflammation and oxidative stress in the body.

Over time, this may contribute to lower energy levels, blood sugar imbalances, premature skin ageing, weight gain and an increased risk of chronic disease.

The good news? Small swaps make a big difference. Choose more protein, healthy fats, vegetables, berries, nuts, seeds and oily fish to support healthy ageing from the inside out.

If you constantly feel tired, crave sugar, crash after meals or rely on caffeine to get through the day, your blood sugar may be on a rollercoaster.

Simple ways to support better blood sugar balance:

• Prioritise protein with every meal• Avoid eating sugary foods on an empty stomach
• Pair carbohydrates with healthy fats and fibre
• Start the day with a balanced breakfast
• Move your body after meals, even a short walk helps
• Reduce ultra-processed snacks and drinks
• Aim for consistent meal timings where possible

Balanced blood sugar doesn’t just support weight — it can improve energy, mood, hormones, focus and long-term health.

Standing in front of Battersea Power Station reminded me so much of our mitochondria, the tiny powerhouses inside our cells that convert the food we eat into energy.

The quality of our nutrition directly impacts how well they function. Protein, healthy fats, colourful vegetables, minerals and antioxidants all help support mitochondrial health, influencing everything from daily energy and mental clarity to metabolism and healthy ageing…

From wealthy Victorian households to coastal fishing communities and industrial workers, fish was a common way to start the day. Before sugary cereals became popular, breakfast was centred around savoury, protein-rich foods that kept people fuller for longer and supported long working days.

Oily fish such as herring, sardines and kippers were also naturally rich in healthy fats and omega-3s, helping to provide steady energy, support brain function, and keep hunger levels stable throughout the morning. Smoked and salted fish were practical choices before refrigeration, particularly in communities close to the sea.
