When your prescription is too high for laser eye surgery, it doesn’t mean that you have no options? 👁️

Last week, we saw a patient with a +7 prescription, which was too high for laser vision correction. However, her eye anatomy gave us another option — an Implantable Contact Lens (ICL).

The depth of her anterior chamber meant that she was an appropriate candidate for ICL surgery and after surgery she achieved 20/20 vision the following day.

Cases like this are a reminder that laser eye surgery isn’t the only route to clearer vision. The right treatment depends on your eyes, prescription and individual suitability.

After 30+ years as an ophthalmologist, here are 5 things I wish more people knew about cataracts:

👁️ They can develop gradually and may go unnoticed in the early stages.

👁️ Blurred or cloudy vision isn’t always something you should simply put down to ageing.

👁️ Glare and difficulty seeing at night can make driving and everyday activities increasingly challenging.

👁️ Colours can look different. Blues and purples, in particular, may appear faded or more yellowish as a cataract develops.

👁️ When treatment is needed, cataract surgery is highly effective. During a single procedure, the cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens.

If changes in your vision are affecting your everyday life, an eye examination can help determine the cause and whether treatment may be appropriate.

🚨 Can cataracts really come back after surgery?

No — a cataract itself does not come back. 👁️

However, some patients may develop Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO), often called a “secondary cataract”, which can cause vision to become cloudy again.

The good news? PCO can usually be treated quickly with a YAG laser procedure.
