Living Out Loud: Garfield Davies

Having lived with hearing loss for decades, retired Consultant ENT Surgeon and long-standing patient, Mr Garfield Davies, has experienced first-hand how hearing technology has evolved over the years.

In this conversation with Adam Shulberg, he reflects on one of the most significant advances he's noticed: hearing in noise.

Hearing someone speaking in a quiet room is one thing. Following a conversation in a busy restaurant, at a family gathering or in a crowded space is something else entirely.

For Garfield, the improvements in speech understanding in noisy environments have been remarkable.

He also reflects on the importance of being guided through those technological advances by a team that understands not only how hearing technology has changed, but how his own hearing needs have evolved over time.

As Garfield reminds us, hearing care isn't just about keeping up with technology. It's about finding the right technology - and the right support - for you.

Thank you, Garfield, for sharing your experience and insights.

Living Out Loud: Dr Len

Should hearing assessments become as routine as checking your blood pressure or having an eye examination?

In this Living Out Loud conversation, Dr Len - a practicing GP - reflects on why he believes hearing should receive far greater attention as part of preventative healthcare.

Untreated hearing loss affects far more than hearing alone. It increases listening effort, places untold demands on the brain and can influence the way we communicate, connect and participate in everyday life.

The earlier a hearing loss is identified, the sooner people can access the support they need - often before it has a significant impact on quality of life and cognitive health.

It's an important conversation about hearing, ageing and the value of early intervention.

Thank you, Dr Len, for sharing your perspective.

Adam Shulberg, Founder and Senior Audiologist at The Well Being BY CUBEX, explains why feeling drained after conversations might not simply be “tiredness”.

Most people think hearing difficulties are about volume.

In reality, it's far more complex than that.

As hearing changes, you naturally begin to compensate. You concentrate harder, piece conversations together, guess at missed words and work harder simply to keep up.

That extra effort builds.

When the brain receives less sound information, it has to work much harder to understand speech. Over time, that increased listening effort can leave you feeling mentally tired, particularly after meetings, social occasions or time spent in busy environments.

This is just one of the many topics explored in The Well Hearing Guide.
Created by The Well Being BY CUBEX, the guide explains why hearing is about much more than your ears. It explores communication, listening effort, cognition and everyday wellbeing, helping you understand your hearing before making decisions about treatment or technology.

Many people think meditation begins with a quiet mind.

In reality, it’s usually the opposite.

While meditating, your mind could wander from one thought to the next.

That isn't failure. In fact, for many techniques, it’s simply where the practice naturally begins. In meditation, the release of stress is experienced as thoughts in the mind.

It isn't about resisting these thoughts or analyzing them. It’s about creating a neutral relationship with them.

With time, something changes.

Not because life becomes less busy, but because you relate to it differently.

Many people experience a renewed sense of clarity, calm and energy.

Like any worthwhile practice, this is about consistency rather than
perfection.

We often recommend meditation to clients with hearing challenges. As the mind and body settle into deep rest, meditation helps people recover from listening fatigue, restore balance, improve attention and focus, and engage more fully with the world around them. .

This is a core belief of ours.

It’s why our clinic considers the whole person – never just hearing alone.

And it’s what makes The Well Being BY CUBEX very different from most hearing care providers.

Living Out Loud: Mr Christopher Chandler is an internationally respected Adult and Paediatric Consultant Neurosurgeon who has spent a lifetime caring for patients with complex neurological conditions.

In this conversation, he reflects on his own hearing loss and why his only regret was not seeking help sooner.

Like many people living with untreated hearing loss, he developed ways to cope. He adjusted. He compensated. He found strategies that helped him get by.

After consulting Adam Shulberg and embarking on a personalised hearing treatment plan, he realised how profoundly his life had been altered by his hearing loss.

Choosing to seek support early can make a meaningful difference - not only for your hearing, but for your emotional wellbeing, your relationships, and your long-term cognitive health.

What makes Happy Ears earplugs the accessory to get, this season?

Because your brain never stops listening. Even sounds that seem to fade into the background demand a small amount of our attention, quietly adding to the mental load of everyday life.

Your brain continues processing these sounds. The hum of traffic outside your window. Conversations in a café. The rumble of a train carriage. Music playing somewhere nearby.

Over time, that constant sensory information can leave you feeling more mentally drained than you realise.

Moments of quiet can feel so restorative. Not because you're shutting yourself off from the world, but because you're giving your mind a chance to recover from it.

Whether you're commuting, travelling, working or simply trying to unwind, reducing unnecessary noise can help create a little more space in your day.

Give your ears and brain a little quiet time.

Shop your Happy Ears earplugs via our online shop.

We know hearing health and cognitive health are closely connected.
Untreated hearing loss has been associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline.

Early intervention can help reduce listening effort and support long-term brain function.

We’re about a whole-person approach to wellbeing.

For some, that means hearing technology. For others, daily meditation, cognitive training or lifestyle changes to strengthen focus, resilience and brain health. For many, natural nootropics such as Lion’s Mane help support memory, attention and cognitive wellbeing over time.

More often than not, the greatest benefits come from a combination of these approaches, working together consistently over time.

Brain health isn't just one decision. It's about small, positive choices made consistently.

We're here when you're ready.
