No two children are the same. So why should their therapy sessions be? 🧸🌿

Earlier in my career, working within the NHS, therapy often needed to follow more standardised or “off-the-shelf” therapy plans. There simply wasn’t always the flexibility to create an entirely different session around every individual child.

One of the things I really value about my private practice at Chattercubs is having the freedom to do things differently.

Before a child walks through my clinic door, I can think about that child.

✨ What captures their interest?
✨ How do they like to play?
✨ What are their communication strengths and needs?
✨ What sensory experiences help them feel comfortable and engaged?
✨ What could I put in the room that might invite interaction, connection and communication?

That means one child’s session might involve climbing, bouncing and movement. Another might be drawn to music and rhythm. Another might spend their session exploring animals, books, puzzles or a favourite repetitive game.

The toys may look simple, but there is a lot of thought behind why they are there.

And once the session begins, the child still gets to lead. I can adapt, change direction and follow what captures their attention rather than expecting them to fit into a predetermined therapy plan.

Their potential. Their needs. Their play. Their sensory preferences.

That’s what tailor-made speech and language therapy means to me. 💛

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Another lovely 5-star Google review from one of the Chattercubs families!

🌟 “We’ve had such a lovely experience with Chattercubs. From the sessions we had, we noticed a big improvement in Alex’s communication. He started speaking more, becoming much more interactive, and using his words more during everyday activities and conversations.”

🧡 It’s been such a great journey to go on with this family. This delightful boy has made huge improvements, and now has some really good spontaneous language and is engaging well in conversations.

🛟 If you’re looking for support for your little one’s speech and language journey, I’d love to help.

Never underestimate the power of a plastic egg… 🥚👀

There aren’t many children who can resist finding a plastic egg hidden around my clinic!

And inside this one? A little finger puppet. 🐸

🎵 “Froggy finger, froggy finger, where are you?”

Then I hide the frog and pause…

For children who are particularly tuned into the musical qualities of language, familiar songs can be wonderful. The melody, rhythm and predictable pattern help them know what’s coming next and build anticipation.

And I’m not necessarily waiting for a word.

I might see a look, a smile, a movement, a sound, a reach towards me — anything that communicates “keep going!”

Then comes the exciting bit…

🎵 “Here I am, here I am! How do you do?” 🐸

That little moment brings together music, movement, anticipation, communication and shared joy — creating a lovely opportunity for back-and-forth interaction.

Sometimes the simplest toys give us the richest opportunities for communication. 💛

When a child keeps playing with the door handle, I pay attention!

A child repeatedly playing with a door handle isn’t always trying to escape the room.

Sometimes they’re seeking sensory input through sound, movement, or both.

Instead of simply stopping the behaviour, I ask myself:
✨ What sensory need is this meeting?
✨ How can I offer that need in a way that supports interaction and communication?

That’s why my clinic is full of movement, music, spinning, drumming, crinkle tubes, noisy toys, and sensory play. By following the child’s interests and sensory preferences, we can build engagement, shared attention, and communication through activities they genuinely enjoy.

This is what child-led speech and language therapy looks like. 💛
