Detergents and Conditioners: Why “For Sensitive Skin” Is Not a Guarantee

A marketing phrase!

“Sensitive skin” is not the same thing as “will not cause a reaction”. A product can be made with fewer obvious triggers and still contain ingredients that some people cannot tolerate. That may include fragrance (and the hundreds of toxic chemicals hidden under this unregulated umbrella term), preservatives, enzymes, surfactants, softening agents, or optical brighteners, depending on the formula.

The label can therefore be misleading if consumers read it as an actual statement. It is better understood as a softer version of the product’s usual design: less aggressive, perhaps, but not chemically neutral. For some households, that may be adequate. For others, especially those with eczema or fragrance sensitivity, it may still be too much.

Discover why “non-bio” is often misunderstood and still causes skin issues in sensitive people. Plus, what it means for a product to be skin-friendly… only that it doesn't cause immediate reactions. And that is the most important fact for manufacturers to rely on when pouring a harsh, toxic chemical soup into a laundry bottle!

Why Detergents and Fabric Conditioners Can Trigger Skin and Health Problems

Laundry products are meant to clean clothes, but for some people, they can become irritating and cause skin issues.

The most common problems linked with detergents and fabric conditioners are skin reactions, especially itchiness, redness, dryness, stinging, and flare-ups of eczema or contact dermatitis. In people who are sensitive to fragrances or certain preservatives, symptoms can also include watery eyes, sneezing, or breathing discomfort when heavily scented laundry is used indoors.

Discover in Part 2 of our latest series why the UK fares the worst (with the US and other poorly regulated countries) compared to Europe.

What Brands Don’t Tell You About Detergents and Fabric Conditioners

Laundry is not a single product but a system.

A detergent is usually designed to do several jobs at once. It must loosen dirt, emulsify grease, suspend soil so it does not redeposit, perform well in different water conditions, and still remain stable on the shelf for months or years.

A fabric conditioner has a different job altogether: it does not clean clothes. It coats fibers with ingredients that make fabrics feel softer, reduce static, and sometimes hold fragrance more effectively (think phthalates).

That distinction is important because people often treat conditioner as a gentle finishing step, like a harmless extra. But it changes the fabric surface. It intentionally leaves something behind. For some households, that is useful, but for others, it is exactly the kind of residue that can be irritating or undesirable.

Discover our new series and how to protect your skin and your loved ones from the harsh, toxic chemical soup in every bottle (or pod).

When it comes to Alzheimer’s dementia, preventative measures go a long way, however, it is often too late by the time a person gets diagnosed.
Conventional medicine is too busy finding a cure for maximum profit than addressing the real cause(s).
This is where naturopathic medicine, functional medicine and, to some extent, integrative medicine play the biggest role.
They do not leave any stone unturned. Plus, each protocol is adapted to you, never a “one pill for one ailment” approach.

A registered professional is not there to work with you, not treating you or your condition, to gently push your bad back into balance.
Are you ready to work with professionals that will focus on better quality of life — before it’s too late?

Detox is often sold as a quick fix, but the real story is much more interesting. Your body already has a built-in detox network that starts inside the cells and depends on the liver, lymphatic system, kidneys, bile flow and colon working together. When those pathways are supported properly, the body can do what it was designed to do: process and eliminate waste efficiently, without the crash of restrictive cleanses or unrealistic detox gimmicks.

PCOS finally has a new name. After years of debate, the consensus has landed on PMOS for polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome.

The name change was needed because the so-called “cysts” of “polycystic” are not actual cysts, but really just follicles or eggs, which are normal for the o***y.
It was also important to include metabolic, because it is tightly linked to diet and lifestyle. PCOS, now PMOS, is widely regarded as a metabolic and endocrine disorder rather than just a reproductive issue. So getting it right is essential for prevention and management.

What are your thoughts on the new name? It sounds a lot like PMS, however, these are two different conditions.

Comment “PMOS” and I’ll DM you links to a couple of articles and the original Lancet paper.
