WHY WE BUILT THIS
Two consultant paediatricians, seven years, and one stubborn question.
Both of us trained and worked in North America, where a child sees a paediatrician at scheduled intervals throughout childhood — not because anything is wrong, but because that's how the system is built. Growth is plotted. Development is tracked. Concerns get raised early, when they're small.
We came back to the UK and found that the routine offer effectively ends at two and a half.
Not because anyone decided prevention doesn't matter. Because the NHS was built to treat what's urgent, and it does that superbly under real pressure. Structured, longitudinal prevention was simply never part of the design.
So we built Bright Futures Health around the American Academy of Pediatrics' Bright Futures programme — the same evidence-based framework, delivered here, by independent consultant paediatricians who wanted to practise this way.
It isn't urgent care and it isn't a replacement for your GP. It sits alongside them. It's the appointment where someone has 45 minutes, the whole picture, and no reason to hurry.
If this term has thrown up a question you've been carrying — about growth, sleep, development, immunisations, or a child who just doesn't seem quite themselves — that's what the appointment is for.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS IN THE ROOM
No mystery, no packages, no upsell. This is what a Well-Child Health Check is.
45 minutes with a consultant paediatrician. A full age-appropriate history — including whatever you've been meaning to ask and haven't. A proper physical examination. Growth, development and immunisation record reviewed. A written plan at the end.
£320 for the initial consultation. Follow-ups, in person or by video, are £260 for 30 minutes. If tests are needed, those are billed separately by the hospital or diagnostic centre, and we'll tell you before anything is arranged.
No GP referral required. Recognised by the major insurers — check with yours first for pre-authorisation.
One thing worth knowing this week: the NHS flu programme for school-age children opened on 1 September. If your child is eligible through school, that's the simplest route and we'd encourage you to take it. If they've been missed, or you're not sure where they stand, bring it to an appointment.

WEEK TWO IS WHEN THE TUMMY ACHES START
Week one, they're fine. Week two, the tummy aches start.
Every paediatrician knows this pattern. The novelty wears off, the routine gets real, and a child who was cheerful on day one is suddenly at the bottom of the stairs at 7.40am saying they don't feel well.
Sometimes it's a bug — plenty are going round. Sometimes it's constipation, or poor sleep, or a genuinely sore throat. Sometimes it's worry, showing up in the place worry shows up in children: the stomach.
And sometimes it's more than one of those at once, which is the bit that makes it hard.
Here's what we'd say to any parent in that position. You don't have to work out which one it is on your own, and you don't have to wait until it's serious enough to feel justified in asking.
A 45-minute appointment with a consultant paediatrician does two useful things. It rules out or identifies a physical cause properly. And it tells you what to do next — including, when that's the right answer, that nothing needs doing and this will pass.
Being told "there's nothing wrong here" by someone who actually examined your child is worth a great deal. So is being told the opposite, early.

FIND THE RED BOOK
Ten minutes this week that are worth more than most of the school-run admin: find the red book.
Last month UKHSA published its guidance for the 2026/27 school year and made a quiet but important point: fewer children have been getting their routine vaccinations than a decade ago. England recorded 736 confirmed measles cases in the first five months of this year, the majority in unvaccinated children aged ten and under.
The gaps are almost never deliberate. They're a missed letter during a house move. A course started and never finished. A child who was unwell on the day. A family who moved to the UK partway through a different schedule.
Nobody is keeping a running total for you.
So: find the record. Check the dates against the UK schedule. And if it's incomplete, unclear, or from another country entirely, that's exactly the sort of thing an immunisation review appointment is for.
A consultant paediatrician goes through the record with you properly, works out what's missing, and gives you a written plan. Immunisation review consultation: £170.

THE LAST ONE WAS AT TWO AND A HALF
Your child had their last routine health review at two and a half.
Not their last GP visit. Not their last vaccination. Their last whole-child check — the appointment where someone sat down, took a full history, and looked at everything.
After that, the routine offer is height and weight in Reception, vision and hearing at school entry, and height and weight again in Year 6.
That's not a criticism of the NHS. It's a system built to catch what's urgent, staffed by people doing extraordinary work with what they have. But it was never designed to do routine, longitudinal prevention — and in July the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health warned that without action we risk raising one of the unhealthiest generations of children in recent years.
So here's the honest question as term gets going:
When did anyone last check your child's growth, blood pressure, vision, hearing, development and wellbeing — all in one appointment, with enough time to actually talk?
If the answer is "nursery," you're not a bad parent. You're a normal one. Nobody told you there was a gap.
We spend the week explaining what fills it. 👇

You’ve read 20 posts. Your child still hasn’t been screened. Let’s change that today.
Over this series, we’ve covered:
• The gap in UK child health screening
• What a well-child visit looks like
• The four stages of childhood health
• Why routine blood work matters
• Immunisation gaps you didn’t know existed
• The doctors behind Bright Futures Health
• Why emotional health needs screening too
• The power of continuity of care

All of it points to one simple truth:

Children deserve proactive healthcare. Not reactive. Not “wait until something’s wrong.” Proactive.

Bright Futures Health connects you with independent consultant paediatricians at locations across London. No GP referral required. Insurance accepted. Self-pay welcome.

One appointment can change everything.

Your move, London.

Catching it early costs £320. Catching it late costs everything.
Let’s be honest about money.

An initial Bright Futures consultation is £320 for 45 minutes with a consultant paediatrician. Follow-ups are £260.

That’s an investment. We know that.

But consider what early detection prevents:
• Months of worry and uncertainty
• Emergency visits that could have been avoided
• Conditions that worsen without monitoring
• The emotional cost of “why didn’t we check sooner?”

Preventative care isn’t an expense. It’s the most cost-effective healthcare decision you can make.

And if you have insurance, your visit may be fully covered. Our billing team handles claims directly.

Your child’s health is worth the conversation. Full stop.
