Thank you, old faithful 🩺 A story of my stethoscope…

After nearly 20 years of being by my side (or more accurately, around my neck), my much-loved .id stethoscope has finally auscultated its final patient.

Bought for me by my parents in time for my very first day of vet school back in 2007, receiving this stethoscope (and of course it had to be green!) was recognition that I was achieving the dream I’d held since the age of 6 - becoming a vet

Over the years of vet school, and then throughout my professional career, this stethoscope was a vital tool for learning & progressing as a clinician. It has offered reassurance of normality, and it has enabled alerts of cause for concern, listening to countless heart murmurs, lung crackles, gut sounds. It has heard the first beats and the very last beats of numerous little (and not so little) souls 💚

My stethoscope has been in my ears travelling throughout the UK & the world - Australia, NZ, the Cook Islands, all through SE Asia and beyond… it has listened to countless species - of course dogs, cats, horses, cows & rabbits etc, but also wombats, camels, parrots, koalas, seals & so many more.

It has had to posted on to me perhaps a few (ahem) times, and colleagues around me will have heard “has anybody seen my stethoscope?” on replay, with so many kind replies or texts of “I’ve put your stethoscope in your pigeon hole” or “I’ll keep it safe for you”. These lovely people are key reasons why I was able to hang on to it for nearly 2 decades!

When last week I had to accept its retirement, it was surprisingly gutting 😫 As the first thing I reach for in patient interactions, it’s a part of my still being a vet in practice, and a stethoscope in particular is personal to each one of us who uses them. For VetYogi I recognised the importance of it as a symbol of our work even incorporating it into one of our slogans

So, I just wanted to take a moment to express gratitude for something that has played a vital part in my career 🙏🏻

I guess I’m finally in the market for a new one - what are your recommendations?

Continuing our celebration of South Asian Heritage Month, we’re delighted to introduce you to Thaminie - also known as T to her friends & colleagues 🤗

Thaminie (rhymes with harmony) came to the UK several years ago from South Africa 🇿🇦 with deep cultural connections to her Indian heritage. As a vet she has gone from strength to strength in small animal practice, excelling in veterinary dentistry and earning her well-deserved certification in this field.

Having had the pleasure of working alongside T in practice for many years now, she is genuinely one of the most caring people you could meet, always there to offer help & support to her team & clients, going the extra mile for her patients 🐾

Always up for a deep discussion around life, religion, human rights, T is a great kind of friend where sharing knowledge & cultures comes naturally; her approach to life & work emphasises this year’s theme of “Unity in Diversity”!

Listen on to hear about the importance of true representation in role models, advice for anyone thinking of undertaking a veterinary certificate, and how a good support network can get you through. Huge thanks to T for collaborating with us! 💛

Yes, I knew… but nobody could have foreseen what happened 🤷🏻‍♀️

Maybe what’s said in theatre doesn’t always stay in theatre if Netflix comes knocking 😆

Are we hopeful as a vet community? 🤞

A week on from Veterinary Human Factors Live, surrounded by some of my favourite people working towards improving veterinary wellbeing, and something that kept coming up for me is how events & collaborations like this give people hope that we can make things better 🙌🏻

It can be almost impossible to feel hopeful when you feel like the only option to look after yourself is to walk away from the profession you love(d)…

It’s challenging to feel hopeful when feedback & ideas for change fall on deaf ears…

It’s hard to feel hopeful when you’re just bouncing from one consult to the next, dealing with complaints and rarely getting time to decompress…

It’s tough to feel hopeful when - to try and protect yourself - you’re mentally checked out & emotionally numb…

All these stories of struggle in vet med, so many reasons for why VetYogi even exists!

It’s wonderful to also hear & share in the other side; when people remember their “why”, examples of what practices & teams are doing that work, innovation for veterinary health & wellbeing. There is HOPE! I’ll be connecting to it every time I take a sip from my beautiful surprise gift mug by ☕️

Huge thank you to the fabulous & hosts with the most 💚 Your hard work, ability to create safe, empowering spaces, provision of tasty vegan food with protein, and passion are much appreciated… on a personal note it was amazing to attend an event without having to lug around yoga mats & boxes of candles 😄

Forgot to take pics but great to catch up with & loads more too!

What gives you hope for the future of the vet profession?

Today marks the first day of South Asian Heritage Month here in the UK and around the world 🧡

This year’s theme is “Unity in Diversity”, and it is our privilege to highlight the importance of diversity & inclusion in veterinary medicine, especially at a time when unity is being challenged in our wider societies.

Someone strongly advocating for diversity in both the vet & VetYogi communities is the wonderful Janika. Locum vet, new mum, EDI champion, previous 30 under 30, and all-round fabulous human, she shares the highs & lows of life, work, parenthood through her social media platform 🩺

As a proud British Indian woman, Janika embraces the cultures influencing her physical & spiritual lives, and is passionate about honouring the origins of yoga. Since joining the VY team she has created valuable cultural yoga content for the VetYogi Collective (with more coming later this year!), educating our students, followers & fellow teachers alike on yoga philosophy & heritage 🇮🇳

Watch on to hear Janika’s insights on how her background helps shape her clinical practice, appreciation over appropriation, and goals for encouraging more aspiring veterinary professionals from South Asian communities to come after 🙌🏾

Huge thanks to Janika for collaborating with us! Suggested resources can be checked out & followed here:
