Thank you, old faithful 🩺 A story of my stethoscope…
After nearly 20 years of being by my side (or more accurately, around my neck), my much-loved .id stethoscope has finally auscultated its final patient.
Bought for me by my parents in time for my very first day of vet school back in 2007, receiving this stethoscope (and of course it had to be green!) was recognition that I was achieving the dream I’d held since the age of 6 - becoming a vet
Over the years of vet school, and then throughout my professional career, this stethoscope was a vital tool for learning & progressing as a clinician. It has offered reassurance of normality, and it has enabled alerts of cause for concern, listening to countless heart murmurs, lung crackles, gut sounds. It has heard the first beats and the very last beats of numerous little (and not so little) souls 💚
My stethoscope has been in my ears travelling throughout the UK & the world - Australia, NZ, the Cook Islands, all through SE Asia and beyond… it has listened to countless species - of course dogs, cats, horses, cows & rabbits etc, but also wombats, camels, parrots, koalas, seals & so many more.
It has had to posted on to me perhaps a few (ahem) times, and colleagues around me will have heard “has anybody seen my stethoscope?” on replay, with so many kind replies or texts of “I’ve put your stethoscope in your pigeon hole” or “I’ll keep it safe for you”. These lovely people are key reasons why I was able to hang on to it for nearly 2 decades!
When last week I had to accept its retirement, it was surprisingly gutting 😫 As the first thing I reach for in patient interactions, it’s a part of my still being a vet in practice, and a stethoscope in particular is personal to each one of us who uses them. For VetYogi I recognised the importance of it as a symbol of our work even incorporating it into one of our slogans
So, I just wanted to take a moment to express gratitude for something that has played a vital part in my career 🙏🏻
I guess I’m finally in the market for a new one - what are your recommendations?
