The Shala School of Yoga

The Shala School of Yoga Yoga Teacher Training & Retreats The Shala was founded by Gingi Lee in 1997, as one of London's first dedicated yoga centres.

In 2014, the Shala expanded and took over a newly refurbished space in a Victorian warehouse in West Norwood, on the fringes of West Dulwich. And in 2016, it developed a well respected teacher training programme. The beautiful purpose-built new centre incorporates three light-filled studios, a therapy room, reception, changing facilities and a small coffee bar for post-practice coffee. There daily

classes encompassing a range styles including ashtanga, vinyasa flow, Mysore self practice, yin and restorative and Jivamukti yoga. The centre is just minutes from West Norwood overground station and is easily accessible from South London's surrounding neighbourhoods including Clapham, Balham, Brixton, Tulse Hill, Herne Hill, Dulwich, Crystal Palace, Forest Hill and Croydon. There are direct train links from Victoria and London Bridge, various buses and cycle racks and free parking nearby. The space is a sanctuary, peaceful, but vibrant and always warm and welcoming. A dedicated yoga space in which to enhance and develop physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. A place to roll out your mat, be part of a community, share, heal and grow. Our teachers all share a deep love and respect for yoga and have a passion for sharing their knowledge and for training a new generation of teachers. Shala classes place an emphasis on encouraging students to develop an individual practice. Our ethos will always be centred around forming a close personal touch on all that we do. Being independent, sharing the love of the practices, and having a positive connection with like-minded people. The centre is also a hub for new life with classes for pregnant women, mother & baby, kids yoga, and teens yoga and a range of workshops from Aerial Yoga to Sound Baths and Breath Work.

One of the great joys of running our teacher trainings is seeing our graduates take what they've learned and make it uniquely their own.

This week we're celebrating Em, one of our graduates who has launched Muse & Move — a beautiful evening of movement, reflection, breathwork, meditation, journalling, and live music, inviting people to reconnect with themselves through creativity and embodied practice.

Alongside launching her own offering, Em is also now our wonderful Studio Coordinator at Vahni / Shala helping to nurture the same welcoming community that supported her throughout her training.

Our focus in training is always to support students to find their own voice and create spaces that reflect who they are.

Rooted evolution.

Within our school, we honour tradition and trust that tradition can grow and shape for modern day needs. We are rooted in what came before, and are willing to move with what's in the here and now.

This is how we respect the lineage and make it relevant to our times.

Here are some of the words 200 graduates used at the end of their training this year, which relate to the Rooted Evolution pillar of our values.

(Saha = Sanskrit for together, with, shared.)

Most yoga teachers commit to a lifelong path of learning and their teaching will continually evolve. Our 300-hour yoga programme supports that process, feeding inquiry, encouraging questions, guiding, supporting, creating community and so much more.

Beyond the Postures is our core 300-hour module for teachers who want to deepen and enrich their teaching. Together we'll explore voice, ethics, breath, meditation, the subtle body, leadership, wellbeing, belonging, psychological safety, creating an equitable yoga culture and so much more to helpyou teach with greater confidence, clarity and inclusivity.

If any of the instrusive thoughts on the first slide resonate with you, this broad and expansive training will help you move past them.

Teaching yoga goes far beyond cueing poses. And this is where we start our Level 1 training, with exploring how to make people feel safe, seen and connected. It is always pure magic to experience the energy of the room when trainees nurture each other in the quietest, softest and most compassionate way.

Escape Wi-Fi, electricity, clocks.

Just the jungle, the lake and nourishing yoga and ayuvedic treatments.

In March 2027, Gingi Lee returns to Ulpotha, an off-grid eco village hidden in the Sri Lankan jungle for a retreat built around yoga, Ayurvedic treatments and the rare luxury of becoming completely unavailable for a while.

This is exactly what yoga looks like sometimes. Facing our fears and the succeeding.

Ellie-Jai is one of our recent 200-hour graduates who has gone on to set up her own business, creating meaningful trauma-informed yoga sessions to support neurodivergent individuals through movement, wellbeing and connection.

A reminder that the courage we practice on the mat has a way of rippling out into the world beyond it 🤍 You can find out more about her unique offerings at

We spend so much time surrounded by noise, screens, and concrete that we forget how different we feel in nature. Nature is infact the antidote to it all, bringing us back to ourselves, to the earth, to our breath, to a quieter mind and a more regulated nervous system.

Reconnecting doesn’t always look like doing more. Sometimes it just looks like going outside. Or practicing yoga outside as Gingi is doing here! 🩷
