If youâve been following me for a while, youâve probably heard me speak a lot about sound healing in prisons - so it means a lot to have been included in the HMP Thameside newsletter, writing about how effective this work can be inside. My hope is that this work encourages other prisons to bring sound healing to their inmates too.
Because what is the point of prison if it creates no real shift? What is the point of incarceration without reform? The cycle has to break somewhere - nothing changes if nothing changes. Clarity of mind and a positive state of wellbeing are where that break can begin. From there, we can start designing our identity, our beliefs, our habits - and make real change in our lives.
An excerpt:
âWhen the nervous system is regulated and the
body is no longer operating from a place of chronic stress, clarity follows. We think more clearly, react less impulsively, and are better placed to make considered decisions. Sustained improvements in wellbeing - better sleep, reduced anxiety, a greater sense of inner steadiness - have a cumulative effect. A person who feels grounded is better equipped to navigate difficulty, manage conflict, and engage constructively with the people and opportunities around them. In a prison environment, that shift has significance that extends well beyond personal comfort. Some of
the most profound moments in these sessions have come from those who arrived the most sceptical. Men who came in reluctant, arms folded, certain this wasnât for them - and who left quieter, softer, visibly shifted. Sound works on the body regardless.â
