'What I Kept for Myself' | Acrylic and mixed media on canvas | 2023

"Created during a period when my sense of privacy, personal boundaries and psychological safety had been profoundly disrupted, this work explores the internal experience of exposure and the process of reclaiming a protected inner world.

The painting developed intuitively, with the flowing marks becoming a form of release when words felt insufficient. The pearl-like forms reference the way a pearl develops in response to an unwanted irritant, surrounding the intrusion with protective layers. They became a metaphor for the psyche’s capacity to respond to disruption through protection, adaptation and transformation.

Throughout the work, boundaries between interior and exterior, body and landscape, containment and movement become blurred. The womb-like negative spaces suggest protection, holding and rebirth, while the surrounding currents carry both turbulence and movement forward.

At its centre, the work considers what happens internally when our boundaries are disrupted and the gradual process of restoring safety, agency and ownership of one’s inner world. The act of painting itself became part of that process: intuitive, embodied and without the need to explain everything in words."

Bridging the gaps in art therapy: materials, relationships, and becoming in practice

In her first editorial as Editor-in-Chief Designate for our academic journal the International Journal of Art Therapy, Kim Valldejuli reflects on what it means to take on this role, and on the importance of creating space for different voices, perspectives and ways of knowing.

As she writes, an editorial role is 'less a seat of authority than a place to hold space for many ways of knowing to meet.'

In this new issue, she introduces six papers exploring connection across materials, relationships, cultures, clinical practice and professional identity, while also sharing her hopes for the journal’s future.

"I value the in-depth conversations with clients about their artwork, seeing how the creative process helps them connect with themselves and find motivation. The tiny changes that clients make are what it is all about."

Art therapist Jack Carberry-Todd tells us about his work in an NHS community mental health rehabilitation team.

What happens after cancer treatment, when the appointments fade but the emotional and identity challenges remain?

A new study from our academic journal, the International Journal of Art Therapy, by Roni Israeli and Johanna Czamanski-Cohen explores this through nine months of open-studio art therapy, with 16 women living with cancer survivorship.

The study introduces:

🎨 Oncological Chaos: the nonlinear and disruptive experience of life after cancer.

👁️ The Ecology of Witnessing: how self-witnessing, being witnessed by others, and artwork itself can help people express, organise and make meaning of experiences that can be difficult to put into words.

The findings highlight the potential of long-term art therapy to support emotional regulation, identity reconstruction, connection and meaning-making beyond cancer treatment.

'Eclipse UK' | acrylic on canvas | August 2026

"I painted this in my garden in Lancashire yesterday during the magnificent event. It was a special time to reflect on our world, to think about our journey. Producing art gives me focus, allowing to blank out negativity. It was a memorable experience which inspired me to paint..."

Anyone else feel like the eclipse sparked their creativity? We'd love to see your work.
