How does Diet Coke contain 0 calories but still taste like sugar? 🧐

Sumo wrestlers prove that “fatness” doesn’t impact health? 🧐

I’m not hating on this creator, so let’s keep the discussion respectful.

There’s a lot to unpack in this video. Some of the points she makes I agree with, and some I don’t. I’ve actually covered most of the arguments she raises (both for and against) in previous videos.

However, I want to focus specifically on the claim that sumo wrestlers are healthy, because this is an argument I hear all the time.

Another carnivore influencer - not as healthy as they thought!? 🧐

I don’t wish ill health on anyone, but let’s be honest - many of us aren’t exactly surprised this keeps happening.

The number of carnivore influencers who eventually have to reintroduce other foods because of health issues (issues that were entirely predictable, btw) would almost be comical… if it weren’t for the fact that they’ve convinced so many others to follow the same path.

If someone chooses to follow this diet, that’s their perogative - but they should know the facts and the risks, so they can make INFORMED DECISIONS.

Diets high in saturated fats and low in polyunsaturated fats and fibre have consistently been shown to be detrimental to long-term health.

This doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed to develop problems on a carnivore diet… but it does mean you’re increasing your risk of chronic illness.

And what’s wild is that when these influencers backtrack, their followers experience such strong cognitive dissonance that they twist themselves into knots making excuses… saying things like “they just weren’t doing it right.”

Maybe… just maybe… the science isn’t as “rigged” as you think it is🫡

Just a few off the top of my head 😁

I’m not here to claim this woman has an eating disorder. But if you’re familiar with her content, you’ll know this type of messaging is consistent with the broader ethos of her page - one that centres around restrictive eating and the pursuit of being “skinny.”

I’m also not going to spend time addressing the original point she was trying to make because we all know it’s ridiculous. Yes, generic calorie recommendations aren’t appropriate for everyone, but recommending 800 calories a day as a blanket target is clearly irresponsible.

One thing I do want to clarify is my comment about muscle loss and chronic disease. The relationship is complex, and there’s almost certainly some reverse causality at play - many chronic diseases can themselves cause muscle loss, making it difficult to determine which came first.

That said, skeletal muscle is an active endocrine organ that plays an important role in everything from blood glucose regulation to overall metabolic health. Given what we know, it’s reasonable to conclude that the relationship is at least bidirectional, and that preserving muscle mass is beneficial for long-term health.

And you’re going to have a very difficult time building or maintaining muscle while eating 800 calories a day and obsessing over being “skinny.”

This type of content is genuinely dangerous. It normalises behaviours that can have serious consequences, and it’s astonishing how many influencers continue to promote them without taking responsibility.

While here I’m focusing on the hypocrisy and weak argument being made, it’s worth remembering we have a large body of evidence showing seed oils are not inherently harmful. For example, a brand new review from .matthewnagra and colleagues ‘Concerns about the health effects of industrially produced seed oils are without scientific foundation: a scoping narrative review of the clinical and observational evidence’ concluded:“The overall balance of evidence from RCTs, observational studies, and MR studies does not support claims of harm. If anything, replacing saturated fat–rich foods with seed oils is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.”

That said, I’m not recommending a diet high in ultra-processed foods that tend to contain seed oils. But when comparing fats directly, the evidence consistently shows they’re a better option than animal fats high in saturated fat.
