Heavy Metals…

Many baby foods contain dangerous levels of heavy metals, including mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic. Exposure can slow growth and development, increase cancer risk and lead to behavioral and learning difficulties. Most metals get into food through water and soil pollution. No wonder we are seeing many new mental illnesses like HDHD on young children! Always make your baby’s and your food with fresh ingredients, it’s time to go back to basics. Lips...

Hi there,

The "Lip" rule is as follow:

Heavy eyes = Natural lips

Natural eyes = Heavy lips

Very few women can get away with both and it is normally more accepted on stage and at New Years Eve parties!

Also take in to account your skin tone when choosing a lip shade.

A simple lip trick for you: try brushing your lips when brushing your teeth...your lip stick will last longer and you`ll be removing all the dry skin.

Apply a fruit lip balm at night and you will enjoy kissable lips always!

Five healthy habits to get ready for bikini season...

Hi there,

It’s not often we focus our blog on fitness here at SkinBase, but with summer upon us, it would appear that bikini season is edging ever closer! So if you’re keen to kick start healthy habits, before you ruin it all on the cosmopolitans and general overindulgence, then you’ve come to the right place! Read on for five healthy tips to incorporate into daily life and help you feel amazing this summer, and beyond!

1. Don’t miss workouts

In my opinion, doing some kind of physical activity is always better than doing nothing – even a regular fifteen-minute workout can help make a positive difference. So, once you’ve planned a workout into your day, try to never skip it. We aren’t suggesting that you have to work out every day and not ever have a rest day as rest days are healthy and very important for your body. But, try and make a promise to yourself to work out a certain number of days per week and stick to it.

2. Make sure your workouts are exciting and full of variety

People often get bored of exercise if they are doing the same thing every day so instead try and vary your workout challenges to include the heart, muscles, lungs and keep your body guessing. Although running three miles every day will help to keep you active, once your body and mind get used to it, it won’t have any wondrous effects. Shaking up your routine will help to take your fitness and progress to the next level. There are so many innovative, fun and exciting exercises out there from Ballet Bod fitness classes to Metafit and insanity so you will be spoilt for choice!

3. Hang up the hang-ups!

EVERYBODY has hang-ups, so it’s important to avoid comparing your body to other people’s bodies and accept that every person is different – even the supermodels who grace the catwalks have hang-ups! Aim to be in the best shape you can be and lead a healthy lifestyle, and you’ll soon find there is no reason to compare yourself to others.

4. Learn to love sleep

Sleep is often underrated; yet it is vital for beauty and health. When you are asleep, muscles repair themselves following a workout and give you enough energy to work out to the best of your ability. Ensuring you get enough sleep is also critical for a strong immune system, a healthy metabolism, and anti-ageing.

5. H20hhhh not H2Noooo

Just like getting enough sleep, drinking enough water is up there when it comes to health and beauty – but the power of both are often underestimated! Getting the right amount of H20 will keep you hydrated and curb your appetite throughout the day, as well as replacing the water lost through sweat when you workout.

I hope you have enjoyed this blog.

Foods rich in Vitamin A to illuminate skin from within...

Hi there,

Foods which are rich in Vitamin A are nature’s own beauty remedy for skin issues. When you consume food-based sources which contain this powerful nutrient, it acts as an antioxidant and is more powerful than supplements or creams. Vitamin A can clear up acne, brighten your skin, fight wrinkles and create a smoother looking skin. It can also be a massive help to those of us who suffer from discolouration and pigmentation problems. We’ve selected four of the best food sources of Vitamin A, so why not try adding more of them into your diet and I guarantee they’ll make a big difference to your skin!

Super sweet potatoes

When this food was labelled a ‘super food’ by nutrition experts across the globe, they weren’t lying or bending the truth. In fact, eating just one sweet potato a day will give you over 100% of your Vitamin A needs. This sweet, starchy root vegetable is also high in potassium and fibre. To ensure you get the highest Vitamin A content, opt for the orange-fleshed sweet potatoes over other types such as purple sweet potatoes.

All hail the kale

Kale has become rather famous in recent years, you can even buy hoodies and baseball caps declaring your love for this leafy green. And it’s not surprising why as this super green is full of Vitamin A, C, iron, and fibre! One cup of kale contains right over 80% of your daily Vitamin A needs. Kale smoothie, anyone? Most leafy greens are especially high in Vitamin A, as are orange veggies. You can usually bet that anything with a bright green, orange, or reddish hue is a great source of Vitamin A. Pass me the kale!

Swap ‘candy’ for carrots

Many refer to carrots as nature’s candy and they really are one of the best sources of Vitamin A there is. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which is the form of Vitamin A found in food-based sources. Carrots also contain Vitamin C, magnesium, fibre, and make the perfect afternoon snack! Carrot stick anyone?

Spinach is packed to the brim with all things good

Spinach is such a nutritious green! There’s almost no vitamin and mineral it doesn’t contain, with Vitamin A being one of the most abundant of them all. Spinach contains over 100% of your daily Vitamin A in just one cup. To obtain the most Vitamin A, it’s best to consume spinach raw instead of cooked, and buy organic where possible.

Vitamin rich smoothies
If you want a daily dose of vitamins but are struggling to regularly include them in your diet at meal times, why not try one of these delicious, vitamin rich smoothies from All Women Stalk?

I hope you have enjoyed this blog.

Perfect the ponytail with these top tips...

Hi there,

In warmer, summer months, it’s likely that more of us will opt for tying hair up and out of the way to help keep us cool. While ponytails are simple enough to put up, it’s getting them to look good that can be trickier. From flyaways to getting your ponytail to stay in the right place, these factors can all influence how good the finished product looks. With these simple tips, the humble ponytail can look great and ooze style.

Brush into place

It’s important to brush your hair back into place before securing it with hair elastics. By doing this with a smooth paddle brush, you will help to detangle it and create a smoother finish. Also, when you’re brushing your ponytail out, hold it at the base to keep it in place and to reduce stress on the roots of your hair.

Dirty vs. clean hair

While there is no better feeling then freshly washed hair, it can actually prove a nuisance when perfecting the ponytail because it can be slippery and hard to fix in place. Unwashed hair that is a little bit greasier is much easier to style and more likely to stay put. Should you only have clean hair to work with, the saviour that is dry shampoo will help to fake some texture.

Location is everything

High, mid, low? Where you tie your hair can make all the difference when pulling off the perfect ponytail and it’s all dependent on your features, so pay attention! A low ponytail can accentuate your jaw and neckline while higher ponytails can elongate your torso. Have a play with different height ponytails and see what looks best on you and suits your face shape the most.

Styling products for sleek ponytails

If you are going for the sleek look, it’s likely you will need the help of some styling products and tools. Applying gel or styling cream to damp hair will help to create that really sleek look. Just pull the damp hair into a ponytail and blow-dry it on a low heat. Another option it to spritz some hairspray on your brush before brushing your hair to help smooth down any flyaways. If you intend on straightening your hair, make sure you straighten every section to ensure the ponytail looks good from all angles.

Give height to your hair

Adding some height to your ponytail can help flatter your features. Teasing your hair at the crown can flatter rounder faces by making them appear more elongated. For a sixties inspired look, backcomb your hair at the crown to give your hair a bit of extra height and then lightly brush over the top to smooth it down.

06/06/2016

Hi there,

Neglect and over indulgence in the colder, winter months can often result in skin that needs a little bit of care and attention when the summer season comes around. A detox can provide the perfect solution and before you run for the hills, don’t worry, we’re not talking about living on cabbage leaves! So, if dark circles under the eyes, blotchy red patches, occasional outbreaks and dry patches all sound familiar, this blog is perfect for you!

Limit sugar intake

I love sugar, who doesn’t!? But you should try your best to avoid it if doing a detox as it can wreak havoc with your body, leaving you looking and feeling drained. Author of The Beauty Detox Foods, Kimberly Snyder comments that sugar binds with proteins and fats causing wrinkles, and it taxes the adrenal glands causing dark circles and leaving you feeling exhausted and moody. But do not fear ladies, giving up sugar doesn’t have to be too tiresome as you can easily replace it with stevia, and after a few days you should start to see and feel the positive impact cutting it out makes.

Try a dairy substitute

Dairy is incredibly mucus forming and causes a range of problems, including skin and digestive issues so is one of the foods that should be removed from your diet when attempting a detox. I actually suffer from a dairy allergy so fully appreciate the havoc it can cause with the body – a congested nose, bad digestion and regular skin break outs are just a few of the symptoms associated with it. Don’t worry if you like milk in your coffee or on your cereal because it can be replaced with unsweetened, almond or soya milk, both of which are very tasty!

Pineapple perfection

I know what you’re thinking – how can something that tastes so divine be so good for you. Yes, it’s true – pineapple is great for skin health and total body rejuvenation! Pineapple contains bromelain, which acts as an anti-inflammatory, breaks down proteins, and removes toxins from the bloodstream. Not only does this help your skin look clearer but it will also help to decrease any inflammatory pain you may be suffering from. I love knowing that eating pineapple is making body, skin, and taste buds happy all at once. Win win!

For the love of lemons

Adding lemons to your water is an excellent way to get the health and skin promoting properties of lemons into your diet. Lemons flush toxins out of the body by acting as a diuretic. This greatly helps your liver detox all your organs, including your skin. Lemon juice also gives you a quick shot of vitamin C, which helps increase collagen production, resulting in fewer wrinkles and fewer blotches! I know I would like to see the little lines around my eyes disappear! At SkinBase, we've got a real soft spot for Lauren Conrad and her fabulous blog. So, we were super happy when she'd also recently posted about detoxing and even included a before and after pic so you can see the benefits for yourself. Take a look inside team LC's detox diary and amazing results!

Top tips to banish wrinkles...

Hi there,

One thing many of us would like to know more about is how to banish wrinkles. There are a lot of simple things you can do to help combat ageing skin which we have pulled together in this blog – for example, have you ever thought about the benefits of avocado or swapping cocktails for H20? Well, you’ve come to the right place with these top tips.

All hail the avocado

Avocado contains a lot of great fats, which can actually help to plump up your skin and it’s also great for your overall health. Why not try adding it to your next salad or putting it directly onto your face as a nourishing mask and your skin will be radiant and glowing in no time.

Don’t underestimate the power of facial scrubs

Exfoliation is essential in helping the skin to generate new cells and ensuring dirt and makeup do not clog up pores, but this part of the beauty routine is often overlooked! Try using a facial scrub at least once a week, you can even make your own simply using a little bit of honey, some lemon juice and sugar. It’s a quick scrub that I love to make, it smells delicious and I make sure I use it on a weekly basis.

Jojoba oil

If you’re serious about banishing wrinkles and improving the skin’s appearance, it’s worth investing in Jojoba oil. This oil is seriously amazing because not only does it improve the skin’s tissue, it also leaves your skin feeling oh-so-soft and improves the appearance of wrinkles. Yes please!

Swap alcohol for H20

All it takes is one look in the mirror after a heavy night’s drinking to work out the sad truth that the more you drink, the worse it is for your skin and the worse those wrinkles are going to be. I am not saying you should stop drinking completely, after all, who doesn’t love the odd cosmo or glass of wine, but why not scale back a bit on those delish cocktails and instead, drink more water. It’s great for your body to be rehydrated and it will help plump up the skin and lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Sun protection

You have to protect your skin from the sun – I can’t stress it enough! A lot of the time, even if you are just going outside for a couple hours, the likelihood is you won’t protect your skin. Instead, throw on a little sunscreen and it’ll go a really long way! There are a lot of SPF infused makeup products on the market too, so even if you forget to apply sunscreen from time to time, at least you are covered and your skin is protected.

Microdermabrasion

The SkinBase Facial™ is a targeted and effective anti wrinkle facial treatment which works by removing the skin’s dead cells and increasing the collagen produced by our ageing skin. The SkinBase Facial™ leaves wrinkled skin looking fresh and smooth as soon as the treatment is over. With SkinBase anti wrinkle microdermabrasion treatment, there is no recovery time and no discomfort – only a noticeable difference to fine lines and wrinkles.

The perfect beauty tips for gym bunnies

Hi there,

With summer upon us, it’s likely many of us are heading to the gym to get in shape before the weather heats up and the layers come off. While the importance of a morning and evening skin care is widely understood, I bet not many follow an after gym beauty regime. Try following these tips to make sure your skin stays happy and healthy at the gym too.

No make-up when working out

We’ve all been guilty of turning up to the gym with a face full of makeup, but panda eyes and runny foundation, aside, it’s best to leave the makeup at home. You’re going to sweat it all off anyway, so do you really want to waste your fave eyeliner at the gym? Bare-faced and ready to get all sweaty from your workout is best and will help prevent your pores from getting all clogged up with heavy makeup. Plus, that after workout glow, which we all love, will help make your skin look amazing and so much better than bronzer!

Gently does it

Likely after a good workout, you’ve built up a bit of a sweat and might be tempted to scrub yourself from tip to toe to feel clean again. But, STOP!!! This could spell disaster, especially if you have sensitive or dry skin already. Instead, gently does it. Choose a shampoo and cleanser which is gentle in nature and will do the trick, no matter how sweaty you are.

A cool shower is better for the skin

Your muscles are sore, and you’re exhausted — what a workout! But resist the urge to spend the next half-hour in the hot shower. It may soothe your muscles, but it will also strip your skin of vital oils, leaving you dry, itchy and unhappy.

Don’t skimp on products

A fully stocked gym bag can feel like a (heavy) burden, but it’s important to treat your skin with the same effort and time as you would in the morning and evening. There’s a reason you use a proper cleanser, moisturiser, shampoo etc at home, so why ruin your routine (and sacrifice your complexion) to save a little time or space in your gym bag?

Re-hydrate your skin

If you have a shower straight after the gym, it’s so important that you moisturise your skin. It’s likely that your skin will have lost a lot of moisture through sweating during your workout so take a few minutes to keep your skin hydrated and healthy by applying a generous dollop of your favourite facial moisturiser and body lotion after the shower. And don’t forget it’s important to re-hydrate your body after your workout too by drinking lots of water.

Protect your skin from the elements

Before you leave the gym and head out into the world, protect your precious skin from the elements. Apply a layer of sun protection, even in winter… and if it’s winter, don’t forget to protect your pucker with lip balm, too.

26/05/2016

Hi there,

If you’re lucky enough to have a holiday coming up, then these beauty tips will help you to look and feel your best when arriving at the chosen destination. While we want to look fresh as we embark on our holiday, it can sometimes be tricky with waking up at the crack of dawn to catch the early flight, drinks at the airport to kick start the holiday, plane food and general indulgence. So follow these tips to help prevent dark circles, exhaustion and dehydration and you’ll start your holiday as you mean to go on, looking and feeling fresh as a daisy. Enjoy!
Boost your energy before an early morning flight

Thanks to the invention of eye drops which will help to revitalise tired peepers, you can laugh in the face of a 5am start. And, to help give yourself a nutritious start and much needed energy boost, (before ruining it all on your jollies!), try having a bowl of porridge topped with a banana or lots of berries which will give you lasting energy.
Pick the right outfit for maximum comfort when flying

Getting the clothing right for a flight is crucial as there is nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable when flying.Tight waistbands and pointy shoes are a BIG no-no, and instead, loose, non-skin pinching clothes and comfy shoes should be worn. Previous research suggests that cashmere is the best material to travel in, however, if you’re bank balance won’t stretch that far (especially with all those amazing bikinis you’ve splashed out on!) then leggings and a lightweight top teamed with a thick pashmina to cosy up into, incase the plane gets chilly, is just the ticket!
Don’t let skin suffer

Wearing makeup while flying isn’t recommended and should be avoided. Makeup will not only clog your pores, but it will also dry your skin out much faster. When flying, moisturiser is a god-send and should be applied to your face and hands liberally and as often as needed. Totally understand that many of you will want to wear makeup of some kind, so if you need some coverage, try tinted moisturiser and apply your mascara and lipstick/gloss just before you arrive. If daring to bare fills you full of dread (believe me, you’re not alone!) why not try a SkinBase Facial before heading on holiday and it will leave you feeling clear skinned and fresh faced (just remember that SPF!).
Catch up on your beauty sleep

If you’re like me and can’t do without the recommended eight-hours sleep, it’s worth investing in an eye mask to block out sunlight and help encourage sleep. The best thing is that there are hundreds of gorgeous designs available to buy. Decent headphones or earplugs are also a great idea, especially if you end up sat next to a large group who are noisy.
Reduce swelling with flight socks

Water is your best friend

The air available in planes is incredibly dry and can wreak havoc with our skin as a result. Therefore, it’s really important that you ensure you’re getting enough water before, during and after flying and go easy on the alcohol. If you can’t avoid it altogether, just ensure that you are drinking more than enough water to counteract the effects of the alcohol, after all – you don’t want to be arriving at your destination with a headache.
Healthy snacking

Snack! Try to avoid the high in salt sandwiches, crisps and sugary offering at the airport or rail station – take grapes, dried fruit and delicious smoothies to keep your body and mind energised.

Start your pre-holiday beauty routine now and book in with a SkinBase therapist now to help your skin looking amazing.

All that’s left to say now is hope those of you jetting off this summer have an amazing time!

Top tips to enhance your features and natural beauty…

Hi there,

While I love nothing more than applying make up and trying new techniques, some days it’s just so much easier to be a natural beauty. If you’re interested in learning more about how to enhance your features and natural beauty, these tips are a great starting point! So put down the foundation, mascara, eye shadow, bronzer etc etc and let’s go!

It’s time to go n**e

No, cheeky – not that kind of n**e! We are referring to removing your makeup. Totally understand this is a very bold move, but if we are going to really try the natural route and enhance our natural beauty, then it is best to start with a clean palette, and forego any makeup… at least to start.

Gently does it

Going makeup free is so much easier when our skin is looking its best, as it really helps to boost our confidence and we are less likely to want to pile on the foundation! Healthy skin is beautiful skin, so it’s important to use a good cleanser to remove all makeup and dirt. Make sure that you choose one that is gentle and doesn’t strip the skin.

Exfoliate your lips

You don’t need to rely on expensive lip-glosses to make your lips kissable and full. Instead, to do this the natural way, exfoliate them and then use a lip balm to keep them smooth, soft and supple. You can purchase exfoliators that are designed specifically for lips, or a simple method to try at home is to rub them with a clean, warm washcloth for one minute.

Wear sun protection

As we near the summer, this is even more important. While we can’t avoid the sun entirely, it is important to be careful and look after your skin by wearing a good sunblock, one that offers SPF 30 broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection. This will help prevent premature ageing and wrinkles, sun spots, and even worse, cancer!

Cheat your way to fuller eyelashes

One thing I really lust after is fuller eyelashes, so if you’re like me and have sparse lashes, cheat by using a clear lash growth serum to enhance your natural beauty. Start applying the serum before you go to bed, and again in the morning after washing, and you’ll notice thicker, darker lashes in as little as 6 weeks. Hooray!

Our recent blog is packed full to the brim with tips on how to have luscious lashes, so have a read to find out more!

Never go to bed without washing your face

We’ve all been guilty of this one, but if you want to be a natural beauty, this is a big no no! It’s important to have a good skin care regime at night as your skin repairs itself when you sleep. So to help it along and enhance your natural beauty, wash each night to remove the dirt and pollution from the day.

We mention healthy skin a lot in the blog above, and the big impact it can have on our confidence. One of the most important factors in achieving healthy skin is drinking enough water, this blog will tell you more about its benefits!

I hope you have enjoyed this blog.
