The RSM acquired the site on the corner of Wimpole Street and Henrietta Place in 1910. King George V and Queen Mary opened the final home of the Royal Society of Medicine at No.1 Wimpole Street in May 1912.

Last week, we hosted our two-day Surgery Section event, Training, Transformation, Excellence: The Surgeon's Cycle of Life.

The event was a huge success, bringing together surgeons and trainees for two days of learning, discussion and professional development. Delegates engaged in critical conversations, heard from internationally recognised leaders, celebrated excellence through prize presentations, gaining insight into the next steps in their surgical career.

During the event, we spoke with ASiT President and Colorectal ST4 Emily Mills, who shared her perspective on why the RSM is such a valuable place for early-career surgeons to expand their surgical knowledge, build professional networks, and grow within the field.

Congratulations to RSM member, Naireen Asim, winner of the RSM Professor Geoffrey D Chisholm CBE Urology Communication Award, led by the RSM Urology Section.

Naireen presented WardWise, a patient-facing digital platform that helps patients prepare questions in advance and speak up confidently during inpatient ward rounds. It's already improving health literacy in urology, and it's now expanding into general surgery.

This Pride Month, it is important to acknowledge both the persistent health inequalities experienced by LGBTQ+ communities and the encouraging signs that progress is possible.

Evidence still shows that LGBTQ+ people in the UK consistently experience poorer health outcomes than the general population, particularly in mental health, screening, prevention, and access to care.

However, there are also reasons for optimism. RSM Medicine and Society Section President Andrew Moran highlighted hopeful evidence of progress:

📚Inclusive medical education is improving knowledge, confidence, and preparedness in LGBTQ+ patient care.

🏥Patient experiences are being embedded in service development. For example, the AFFIRM Framework for gender-affirming psychological care was developed from transgender patient narratives.

🧪Patients with access to an affirming provider are more likely to engage with screening and testing.

“These examples demonstrate that progress is possible when healthcare is inclusive, responsive, and willing to address stigma. Destigmatised education, care models, and patient partnership can create healthcare that is safer, more effective, and more trusted for LGBTQ+ communities.”

🌈The medical profession has a responsibility here. Education, training, and inclusive practice are not optional extras—they are part of delivering good care for every patient.
