When people tell you endometriosis is "just bad period pains"... ❌

Professor Mohamed Mabrouk, Consultant Gynaecologist at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital, disagrees.

Endometriosis is a chronic condition affecting around 1 in 10 women in the UK, where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows elsewhere in the body. It can affect the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, bowel and other areas of the pelvis, and can even infiltrate other major organs such as the lungs or kidneys.

While painful periods are a common symptom, they're only part of the picture. Endometriosis can also cause:

πŸ”Ί Debilitating pain
πŸ”Ί Heavy or irregular periods
πŸ”Ί Fatigue
πŸ”Ί Pain during s*x
πŸ”Ί Pain when urinating or opening your bowels
πŸ”Ί Bloating and digestive symptoms that can be mistaken for IBS
πŸ”Ί Fertility challenges

Symptoms often fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle because endometriosis is influenced by hormones, particularly oestrogen. This is one reason why flare-ups can feel worse at certain times of the month.

Despite affecting so many women, endometriosis can be difficult to diagnose. The condition's symptoms overlap with several other health conditions, and it takes an average of eight years for many people to receive a diagnosis.

The most important thing to remember? Severe pain, debilitating symptoms and feeling unable to carry on with daily life should never be dismissed as something you simply have to put up with.

If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and seek advice from your GP, a Spire GP, or speak to one of our experienced endometriosis specialists at Spire.

Spire Cheshire Hospital is proud to mark a significant achievement, having successfully completed their first HoLEP procedures as part of the expanding urology service. πŸ₯

HoLEP is a minimally invasive treatment for men with an enlarged prostate. Using laser technology, the procedure removes obstructing prostate tissue that is causing urinary symptoms, helping to improve urine flow and ease symptoms such as frequent or difficult urination. This can be performed as a day case procedure or overnight stay.🚹

Mr Matthew Liew, Consultant Urologist, said πŸ’¬ β€œI’m delighted that HoLEP is now being offered at Spire Cheshire Hospital. This is an important addition to our urology service and gives suitable patients access to a 'platinum standard', minimally invasive treatment option for enlarged prostate.”

Ben White, Hospital Director at Spire Cheshire Hospital, said πŸ’¬ β€œWe’re proud to introduce HoLEP at Spire Cheshire Hospital. Enlarged prostate symptoms affect many men and offering this advanced treatment provides another effective treatment option for our patients. The Introduction of innovative procedures such as HoLEP reflects our commitment to expanding access to the latest technology and continually enhancing the services available to our patients.”

Spire Liverpool Hospital recently attended Exchange Flags in Liverpool to provide free mini health checks for local professionals and members of the community. 🫢

Our clinical team, including a registered nurse, healthcare assistant and physiotherapist, carried out health checks and offered advice on general health and wellbeing throughout the day. 🍏

The free checks included blood pressure, blood sugar, oxygen saturation levels, height, weight and BMI measurements, giving attendees a snapshot of their health and an opportunity to discuss any concerns they may have.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by. With 28 health checks completed during the event, it was great to support local people in taking a proactive approach to their health and wellbeing. ❀️

πŸ’¬ "I now feel very optimistic about the future. I'm back to the Bev, I used to be." πŸ’«

Bev, 60, from Lincoln, lives a very full life with her husband and dog Duke, and spends time enjoying going for walks together. Unfortunately one evening whilst doing a breast examination at home, Bev discovered a lump. πŸ’¬ "My world stopped, I did go into some very, very dark places. I was very scared."

Using her private medical insurance, Bev was able to access specialist care at Spire Healthcare, where she received the life-changing diagnosis of breast cancer from her appointment with a breast specialist.

Following her diagnosis, Bev was given a comprehensive treatment plan, including chemotherapy. With clear communication at every stage and a thorough understanding of what to expect next, she felt supported and reassured throughout an incredibly challenging time. 🫢

πŸ’¬ "I used to call my nurses my chemo angels, nothing was too much trouble, you could ask them any questions, they would sit and hold your hand."

After chemotherapy and a lumpectomy to remove the lump, Bev received the incredible news from her breast surgeon that she was cancer free.πŸ’—

Watch Bev's inspiring story to hear how specialist breast care helped her get back to the life she loves.

πŸ’šWe never forget walks with Duke.
πŸ’šWe never forget supporting every step.
πŸ’šWe never forget what matters.
