For Nick, an active dad of two, sport has always been a big part of life. But what started as back and leg pain became something much more serious, affecting his ability to exercise, spend time with his family, and enjoy the things he loved most.

"My recovery time began to take longer, effective treatments became harder to find, and my symptoms got worse," says Nick. "It was beginning to severely limit my activities. I was missing out on things with my boys, couldn’t do my regular exercise, and it was affecting my wider health."

With his pain having such an impact on his life, Nick saw an orthopaedic surgeon to get to the root of the problem. An MRI and CT scan showed that his L5-S1 disc, the lowest cushion in the spine, was fused, and his L4-5 vertebrae had slipped, compressing a nerve root in his spine.

The surgeon presented Nick with multiple treatment options, including physiotherapy, injections and surgery. While physiotherapy and injections could have delayed Nick’s need for surgery, they didn’t offer a permanent solution.

With reservations about back surgery, Nick sought advice and was recommended getting second opinion from Professor David Choi, a neurosurgeon at The Wellington Hospital. After getting a referral, Nick discussed his treatment options with Professor Choi, who clearly laid out the benefits of surgery.

“It was clear very quickly that he excels as a neurosurgeon, and I knew I’d found the leading expert I needed!”

Nick arranged his surgery at The Wellington Hospital for eight weeks after his initial appointment, letting him fit it around his busy schedule.

“When I came round after the surgery, all the pain had gone,” Nick recalls. “The surgery has been completely life-changing. The severity of my pain was only truly clear when it was gone.

“The treatment and support I received during treatment, recovery in hospital and discharge have been outstanding.

“The kindness and care provided by the nurses and physios who, quite literally, got me back on my feet afterwards is something that will stay with me long after I am fully recovered.”

This World Heart Day, we're celebrating the patients who have trusted us with theirs.

From life-changing diagnoses to life-saving treatment, we're privileged to be part of so many journeys and inspired every day by the resilience and courage of the people we care for.

It's why sharing patient stories matters. They remind us that behind every procedure, scan and consultation is a person, a family and a future.

We're proud that more patients choose us for their cardiac care than any other independent provider, a reflection of the trust placed in our expert consultants, specialist teams and personalised approach to care.

Because every heartbeat matters. ❤️

PCOS has a new name.

🎥 Watch Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Nickkho-Amiry as she explains why polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS) is now known as polycystic morphology endocrine and metabolic syndrome (PMOS).

The new name reflects a growing understanding that this condition is about much more than the ovaries alone. It can affect many aspects of health, including hormones, metabolism, periods, ovulation, skin health, and fertility.

Everyone's experience is different. Some people may experience irregular periods, acne, excess hair growth, or challenges with fertility, while others may be affected in different ways.

Understanding the broader nature of PMOS can help people feel more informed, supported, and empowered to seek the care that's right for them. 💙

This Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, we sat down with Professor Francis Vaz, Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon at The Harley Street Clinic, to discuss the symptoms to look out for, how thyroid cancer is diagnosed, and the treatment options available.

Thyroid cancer is the 20th most common cancer in the UK, accounting for just 1% of all new cancer cases. However, it is becoming more common. According to Cancer Research UK, rates of thyroid cancer have risen by 62% over the last decade and are projected to rise by a further 27% by 2038–2040.

That's why it's important to know the signs and symptoms to look out for. Treatment for thyroid cancer is usually most effective when it's found at an early stage, so getting any changes checked without delay can make a real difference.

🎥 Watch as Professor Vaz shares his expert insights.

This PMOS Awareness Month, we're raising awareness of Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS, formerly referred to as PCOS), a complex condition that can affect hormones, metabolism, fertility, wellbeing and long-term health.

We stopped by our Women's Health Centre on Harley Street to speak with Ms Lubna Haque, Consultant Gynaecologist and PMOS specialist, and get her expert insight:

"PMOS is far more than a reproductive health condition. It can impact many aspects of a woman's physical and emotional wellbeing. Many women experience symptoms such as irregular periods, acne, excess hair growth, weight changes and fertility challenges, yet diagnosis can often be delayed. This is because symptoms can vary significantly between individuals, develop gradually, and are sometimes mistaken for other health conditions.

Throughout my career, I've supported many women living with PMOS and understand the significant impact it can have on their daily lives. Awareness campaigns play a vital role in supporting the PMOS community and helping more women recognise symptoms earlier, so that they can see a specialist and receive the holistic care they deserve."

This PMOS Awareness Month, let's continue the conversation, challenge misconceptions and support better outcomes for women living with PMOS.

“I’m really proud of my career journey because I’ve been able to develop myself while also helping other people develop within the team. The support from my managers, supervisors, colleagues and experiences with different departments and patients what has made me who I am today will always in my heart.

I really enjoy knowing that what we do has a direct impact on the patient experience. When I see a patient happy and know that housekeeping team has played a small part in that, it makes me feel proud. It shows me that we are truly committed to caring for people and making a difference to their lives in difficult circumstances.

I really love when the team works together, especially during challenging days - We still manage to achieve what we need to achieve. Knowing that we can make a positive difference to both my team and the environment we provide for patients is something I’m very proud of."

“Radiotherapy is a life-saving cancer treatment, we are continuing to invest in the latest technology, so that patients continue to have access to the best possible treatment options.” - Helen Burland, Head of Radiation Oncology Services HCA UK

This World Radiotherapy Awareness Day we want to recognise the important role of radiotherapy in treating cancer. We're currently installing our Elketa Unity MR-Linac, making this innovative, targeted and highly effective treatment option available to more people.

Radiotherapy is delivered through machines called linear accelerators, often referred to as linacs. The latest advancement in this technology is a linac combined with MRI imaging, known as an MR-Linac. This provides real time imaging and treatment plan adaption, so we can deliver precision radiotherapy.

📣 We’re proud to share a UK-first in spinal surgery.

Mr Irfan Malik, Consultant Spinal Surgeon with a specialist interest in spinal neurosurgery, recently performed a minimally invasive lumbar spinal fusion at The Harley Street Clinic, using an innovative combination of Siemens Healthineers Cios Spin imaging and Stryker’s neurosurgical navigation system.

This marks the first time in the UK that these technologies have been used together in theatre, the integration of real-time, CT-like 3D imaging with navigation support enables highly accurate placement of four screws to fuse the patient’s vertebrae, eliminating movement between them to relieve pain and other symptoms.

We are so pleased to say after a 48 -hour hospital stay, the patient was back to light daily activities just two weeks post-surgery!

Mr Malik shared “Precision is everything in spinal surgery – even a few millimetres matter. This technology gave us increased confidence throughout the procedure, helping to deliver safer, faster care.”

A huge thank you to our theatre and clinical teams for supporting this milestone. Here’s to continued progress in advancing patient care 💙
